When grandson Philip Richard Perry was born to Liz Cheney and Phil Perry in July 2004, the White House issued the same type of photo: The baby with Dick and Lynne Cheney. Maybe they’re just being consistent?

Maybe I'm making too much out of this, but I thought it was odd for this to be the first public portrait of Samuel. This is usually a more carefully considered decision than snapshots shared among family members.

I can certainly understand though if Mary doesn't think she's quite ready for her close-up.

When my daughter was born, her grandparents were falling over themselves to get photographed with the new baby, and sending pictures to every relative and friend they could think of. I personally didn't want to be in snapshots -- I felt like I'd been hit by a bus -- luckily, I'm not famous enough for the media to try to capture my image for posterity!

Every parent is different (and the stresses of public attention can only make things more difficult), but personally I was proud as could be of having my child photographed whether I was in the picture or not.
