Did you know that, according to the Website of the John Birch Society, one of their members, back in the days when Alan Stang was broadcasting for them, was a man named Ronald Reagan? His record in the White House lends credibility to that statement.

The Alan Stang report was my favorite on local radio -- the commies are under your bed!

But, maybe -- Mr. Stang did get something right -- his is not the first mention about Rove's father:

I do have to chuckle a little. While the crazies are ranting and raving and seeing conspiracies.... they aren't entirely wrong.

The Republican Party, like all institutions that require exhaustive commitments and creativity, has a large number of gay persons in positions of power. But that's also true of the Democratic Party and probably, if we looked at it, the John Birch Society as well.

I can only guess why, but homeowners associations, political parties, fraternities, and committies of every sort tend to attact gay people. Perhaps it is because gay people have more time available, or perhaps they seek to leave a legacy that doesn't involve procreation.

I do know that the gay friends I've known the longest I met through College Republicans. And they were the ones who were not content to just show up for meetings, but instead ran the organization.

Or, at least, that's the thought that flickered through my head on Sunday as I had a cocktail with a highly placed person in the state's Republican Party.
