Incidentally, one of those links on the LCR website goes to the Philadelphia Daily News. In the paragraph following Sammon’s quote, we read this:

And it wasn’t just Craig’s comments, but the reaction of many GOP activists and bloggers – many of whom want the senator to resign immediately – that revealed a party much more uncomfortable with homosexual misconduct than with other sins. Many bloggers who want Craig to quit amazingly didn’t reach the same conclusion with married, “pro-family” Louisiana GOP Sen. David Vitter, who admitted having sex with a female prostitute.

LCR isn’t a “blogger” but a political advocacy group who does heroic work trying to educate the Republican party on the needs and very existence of gay conservatives. I know the LCR are often dismissed for tilting at windmills or worse, but hey — somebody’s gotta do it and God bless ‘em for staying in the fight. But their messages appear to be more in line with the bloggers mentioned above.

I think they’re missing teachable moment. It’s good that they’re calling for Sen. Craig’s resignation. I just wish they’d point out the double standard within the GOP, and am puzzled as to why they don’t want to do it.

Unless, of course, it’s out of political expediency (Vitter’s state has a Democratic governor). In which case, it’s politics over principle, which I guess means they’re no different from any other partisan organization. But still, where there’s a double standard, I’d expect any gay-rights organization to have the integrity to point it out.

Patrick Sammon, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group that supports gay rights, agreed. “I think voters don’t have much patience for hypocrisy,” he said, regardless of one’s party affiliation. “I think voters are tired of people who don’t live honest lives.”

Hypocrisy is not a sin associated with only closeted homosexuals, Sammon said.

He pointed out that Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican, in July acknowledged having telephoned the alleged D.C. Madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Like Vitter, Sammon said, “Sen. Craig has tried to legislate morality at the same time he’s having serious character and integrity problems himself.”
