Associated Baptist Press Reports Criticism of Ex-Gay Study

September 21st, 2007

In an article today, Robert Marus reported in ABPnews.com both the claims and the criticisms of the Jones and Yarhouse study. It is encouraging that this Christian press was willing to put accuracy ahead of theology in reporting the story.

A new study suggesting that religiously motivated conversion from homosexual orientation is possible and not harmful has been hailed by some social conservatives, while others are questioning the study’s motive and methodology.

It’s also cool that they quoted us.

Jones and Yarhouse’s effort did not provide much better evidence, Burroway said. “This study held great promise based on its initial design, but its conduct left much to be desired,” he wrote. “Its rigorous design was not matched by similar rigor in execution. And so we’re still left waiting for that definitive breakthrough ex-gay study. I don’t think this one is it.”

“..not a person”?? Larry, I’d be careful with what you call your sites in the future. a better acronym would have been “BANO”- “behavior and not orientation.” It’s easier to tell people and overall sounds less clumsy- and less cruel.

Larry: I would suggestthat you read all of the commentary in this link on the “conversion” of Michael Glatze. I think it is very informative, and Daniel’s very thoughtful commentary on this issue is the best exposition I have ever read.

Bottom line– you can believe whatever you want to. I’m going to object strongly if you insist that I believe it as well, and that my rights as an american and a human being are going to be compromised merely to validate your beliefs.

As Daniel says, you can be a monkey if you want to. It does not invalidate my experience, or mean that somehow your social and religious agenda should determine the course of my life.

Larry,

If you are a regular reader then I’m sure you know that we regularly cover ex-gay issues. Please feel free to comment. That is probably the best venue for a meaningful, open, and honest discussion with our readers.

Thanks Timothy,

I found the article in the current issue of the Mother Jones Magazine interesting being published before Jones and Yarhouse’s study. So I hope you take the time to read the article.
The author, who identifies himself as a practing psychotherapist, agrees with Jones and Yarhouse.

So Timothy how do you respond to the article in the Mother Jones Magazine?

Larry,

I read the Mother Jones piece and found it light on substantial argument and long on leftist theory. As the conservative writer here, it wasn’t really my cup of tea.

While his notions of sexual fluidity fit well with the left’s “homosexuality as rebellion against the paternalistic heirarchy” notions, Greenburg provided VERY little science in his “science of sexual identity” article.

What was present was Lisa Diamond’s study of 79 nonheterosexuals which, while interesting, was neither informative nor significant. The sexual histories of a group of women identified diversely as lesbian, bisexual, and not accepting of labels sounds more to me like politics and less like science.

In my opinion, Greenburg’s musings aren’t particularly relevant to the discussion.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
