Focus On the Family’s James Dobson wrote an op-ed in today’s New York Times in which he discusses some of the outcomes of the uber-secret Council on National Policy meeting that took place in Salt Lake City last Saturday. While saying that the conferees aggreed that “If neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join others in voting for a minor-party candidate,” support for forming a third party was mixed.
While media reports suggest that the religious right is fractured over who to support for president, Dobson contends “if the major political parties decide to abandon conservative principles, the cohesion of pro-family advocates will be all too apparent in 2008.”
But if that’s true, it may be another example of trying to win a battle while loosing a war. If the religious right really wants to build a coalition for the ages, they need to figure out how to address the plummeting drop in the esteem for Christianity among the next generation.
One area they might want to address is the uber-secret conferences (whose name and membership must not be mentioned) which lend support to the notion of a “vast right-wing conspiracy” — and one that includes Paul Cameron as one of their members.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. Oh, I would not understimate this man Dobson. He is one of the biggest movers and shakers in the evangelical realm in the USA and lots of god fearing christians listen to him.
The subtle message behind what he is saying is simple extortion. Legal extortion. Because the political parties are beholden to their consituencies and not visa-versa.

I am a conservative evangelical. I will vote for the man that is the Republican Primary winner whether or not Dr Dobson supports him. At present I appreciate what Dr Dobson is doing and saying. The candidates are certainly accountable to their constituncies, of whom Dr Dobson and myself are members.
I also know that if Clinton or any of the others get in office they will degrade at a much faster rate the freedoms that we evangelicals currently have. I personally agree more with Hugh Hewitt’s approach than Dr Dobson’s, although my esteem is of the highest for both of them. Much more so than for any of the current crop of Republican candidates.

Denny– what freedoms do you have that you are worried you will not have? What freedoms do you have that we as gay people do not have? Can you be discirminated against on the basis of religious belief– as we can?

The fact that Mr. Dobson doesn’t blink an eye at going to some secretive policy planning meeting should serve as a warning flag. This is not behavior that inspires respect and confidence, rather it inspires suspicion and distrust. Dobson speaks of a cohesion reached behind closed doors, to me that reeks of conspiracy and is counter to the very notion of a free and open society where ideologies are allowed to battle it out in the public forum. If Dobson and company have to secretly plan to win the culture war, maybe it’s time that the rest of us make sure that more sensible and reasonable thinkers take office lest we all end up in some oligarchy run by Dobson and his hand-picked politicians.
