Having a Cow Over McDonalds

Ed Brayton is thinking about starting a weekly award “for the most ridiculously hyperbolic rhetoric I come across.” Ed might want to think daily. Anyway, he thinks that anti-gay rhetoric alone will provide plenty of fodder, although that’s not strictly his beat. He was checking out the personal blog of Rick Pearcey, husband of Nancy Pearcey of the Discovery Institute. That’s where Ed found this little gem:

Not today, in light of reports that McDonald’s has decided, apparently, to declare war on my family. And to declare war on the civilization of liberty, independence, creativity, and humanity under God that my Dad fought for in World War II.

What did McDonald do the “declare war” on liberty, independence, humanity, World War II, and Ricky Pearcey’s family?

Well it turns out he gets his “news” from the American Family Association’s OneNewsNow:

McDonald’s … has given a significant amount of money, I might mention, to become a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce,” Wildmon explains. “Among the many other things that the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce promotes is hate crimes [legislation], the ENDA [Employment Non-Discrimination Act]. [T]hey’re dedicated to pushing the homosexual agenda.”

In exchange for the donation, a McDonald’s senior executive has been placed on the board of the pro-homosexual group. Wildmon says the chain’s decision is baffling

Wildmon is apoplectic, and so is Pearcy. Brayton found this reaction particularly noteworthy:

For human beings, this is a matter of liberty under God — Why help finance groups that turn their backs on the Declaration of Independence, the Founding vision, and the living Creator who holds it all together?

Run for the hills everyone! World War II was all in vain.

I went to the dude’s blog and saw this:

“correctness of rejecting trumped-up victimhood and pretend discrimination based on membership in an ethically challenged but politically powerful interest group.”

which made me write this:

Pretend? Ask Lawrence King, ask Gwen Araujo, ask Matthew Shepard, ask Brandon Teena, ask Danny Overstreet, ask JR Warren, ask PFC Barry Winchell, ask Billy Jack Gaither, ask Tyra Hunter, ask Bill Clayton, ask Daniel Fetty. Oh wait, you can’t ask them because they, along with plenty of others, are DEAD.

And I’m the one who’s ethically challenged?

Aww, it looks like he’s screening his comments. Too bad. Mine was chuckle-worthy! ;-)

Here’s my take on the AFA McDonald’s hysteria, and some advice:

But before you read the rest, do these things:

* Call (or better yet, buy a meal) at your local McDonald’s and tell the manager that you are proud of McDonald’s commitment to diversity.
* Write or email McDonald’s President, congratulating McDonald’s on their commitment to all Americans:
* Andrew J. McKenna, President McDonald’s

The problem with wanting to support McDonald’s ethics in this situation: I seriously dislike their food :) But I can (and will) write them a letter.

Erica, me too. Kind of like wal-mart doing some equality work. This is an exaggeration, I know but it’s like Hitler sending you a birthday present, “Thanks, but uh, you’re still evil.”

My biggest problem with McDonalds is that I DO like their food. Yes, I know it has no nutritional value and that it’s fattening and dreadful.

But, darn it, sometimes I just crave their fries.

As for the OneNewsNow website, sometimes we read it aloud here at work because it provides so many laughs. If we didn’t know it was considered (by the AFA) a news site, we would think it was somebody’s idea of great satire. As it is, it just makes the AFA look stupid and sad. These people are completely unhinged!

Huge numbers of gay men and lesbians fought in WW2, including 2 of my grandfather’s siblings. What did they fight for?

Also, the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, who was a Unitarian who made his own Jesus-free bible, and is widely known and quoted today as a man who hated Christians and Christianity.

So much for the facts, as usual.

Johno, Jefferson’s Bible was not “Jesus-free” but miracle-free. He still considered himself a Christian as a follower of Jesus’ uplifting moral teachings, yet he also considered the apostle Paul a corrupter of Jesus’ tradition.

Now to stay on topic, I can only hope Mr. Pearcey will be forced to continue adding places to his banned list.

Wow….now I haven’t had a Big Mac in about twenty years.
But the sausage biscuit and coffee breakfast are to die for.

Huzzahs to Mickey D’s. After all, I know that they hire LGBT young folks and that’s a good thing.

The hysterics over McD’s outreach is farfetched and smacks too much of paranoia and mental problems.
People eventually WILL wonder…gee, Wildmon, where’s the fire?

It occured to me, doesn’t McDonald’s own Chipotle? I’m pretty sure they do, and that would make eating their giant burritos that much tastier!

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
