Macy's is celebrating nothing more than another money making opportunity. Let's be real here; Macy's couldn't give one rat's ass about marriage equality or gay rights. Don't get me wrong, I'm a capitalist. There's certainly nothing wrong with placing this brilliant ad in safe markets, with it's cleverly non-gay-specific language. I salute their business sense in so quickly and effectively recognizing and exploiting this ruling to expand a new market but it's absolutely ridiculous to act as if it this ADVERTISEMENT is anything more than that.

Forgot Subaru and VW fighting it out for ad space, too. Apple and Microsoft.

This must really be what the fundies are afraid of: Marketing. Kids in CA won't be able to watch teevee anymore for all the advertising. Gay men shopping for cars, drapery, and clothes and lesbians for trucks, camping equipment, and comfortable shoes. K-razy! Fundie nightmare!

Well, hell yeah, we're a big part of their demographic, and it costs so little for them to change a few things around to make it easier for us to spend more!

Not that I'm complaining. A small, friendly corporate gesture that goes a long way? Win-win-win.

Now, you know Crate 'n' Barrel is just railing they didn't get out there first. Well, with a big ad trumpeting how gay-friendly they are, that is--probably was just coasting along with the general assumption that they're the gayest store going and washed their hands of it.

How about they release ads next week with "Oh, heavens no, WE've always loved gays and lesbians more! Register with us and not those stinky Johnny-Come-Lately Macy's."

Then there'll be IKEA, Bloomie's, and REI. Kenneth Cole'll have a special run on suiting....it's just a big gay wedding extravaganza avalanche from there.

Business has typically been much more progressive than the rest of society in terms of equality. this is because money knows no boundaries - not race, not sexuality, not gender. If you have capital and you want to spend it, they want your business. Period. And a key to getting the greater population to leave gay people alone, stop sensationalizing our love lives, and just see us as plain ol' "normal folk," is for the rest of the world (outside your local gayborhoods) to start treating us like we're "normal." If people see a (tasteful) ad walking down the street geared towards gays - OR, geared simply towards EVERYBODY - they won't think twice about it. Stop treating it like it's a big deal, and it'll stop being a big deal.

It seems Macy's has gone beyond just an advertisement. If you go to register at their site, either party can list themselves as bride, groom, partner, or registrant. And the event can be a wedding, an anniversary, or a commitment.

Thanks, Macy's
