The program cancelled by Ms. Barnett allowed a couple to get married for less than $100. In fiscal 2007 44% of all of the marraige ceremonies performed in Kern County were performed by Ms. Barnett's office. The people who will be hurt by Ms. Barnett's actions are the young,poor, straight couples who relied upon the county clerk's program. The question now, is whether she will issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Tuesday. She has stated she will do so, but the ADF is most certainly advising her not to do so. They want a martyr. She won't speak to County Counsel Barney Barmann, who is sweating bullets because of the liabilty exposure if she disobeys the law.
