Brad Pitt Gives to Fight Proposition 8

Timothy Kincaid

September 17th, 2008

Back in September 2006, Brad Pitt announced that he and Angelina Jolie would not marry because gay people could not marry:

Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able

Some might have thought that was just a convenient way of supporting a cause while avoiding pressures to marry. But now Pitt has put his money where his mouth is. The LA Times is reporting that he has given $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign.

Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8

might want to reconsider the headline.

“Brad Pitt Gives To Prop 8” makes it sounds like he is giving money in support of the proposition.

I almost pooed myself!

I agree with Jason about the headline making it sound as though Pitt supports Prop. 8–until I actually read the article, *I* thought he did.

Go Brad!

If Mr. Pitt would donate that shirt and Levis he is wearing in that picture (which, by the way, is not a recent one) we could auction/raffle them off for lots more than $100K.

I’m grateful for his generosity and his moral support. Thanks Mr. Pitt.

I’m going to watch Thelma & Louise tonight just as a token of my appreciation. (But I loved him best in Meet Joe Black.)

David Geffen is gay and worth a few billion. where is he? He wouldn’t miss 10 mill or so.

Barbra Streisand has a gay son and is owrth, I think, 200 mill. How about $100,000, BS?

Oprah tells us she’s on our side. Got an extra $100,000.

Patrick Knight, where are you?

Neal Patrick Harris, where are you?

Steven Spielberg quit the boy scouts over their anti-gay policies. Where are you right now?

I admit, I don’t know what they are doing. but whatever they are doing, they should be more visible.

Just as Obama needs to walk a tight rope with endorsements from high-profile celebrities for fear he gets labeled an elitist, we gays need to carefully avoid looking too Hollywoodish and appeal to those “undecided” voters who recognize our basic goal is equality. Celebrity money and moral support is always welcome but we need to stand on the principle of fairness in the eyes of the Constitution. That will convince more of the voters.

I was invited to a gathering of mostly Mormons at a social function last night. I was surprised by some of the comments of the people about the Proposition 8. Some of those I thought were ardent (orthodox) Mormons were saying it is not a big deal if the proposition fails. (Nearly floored me.) But, (sigh) I recognize I will never know what they do behind the curtain at the voting booth as opposed to standing in front of me and saying these things to me face-to-face.

are all contributions public? Is it possible to contribute anonymously.
Some celebrities do contribute to the world around them, but do so secretly due to modesty, privacy, or other concerns.

The finances of these celebs are not a matter of public record, so we don’t know how well they are doing. In hollywood, it’s best to put forth the appearance of wealth and success. Like with other situations, people are more likely to hire you, and work with you, when it looks like you don’t need the money.
The people mentioned so far in the comments are not A-Listers, so who knows what they’re making.

Yet another reason to like Brad Pitt!!! What a hunk! And he’s got a BIG, FAT, wallet! :-)

Jason D – I believe that since this is a public voting issue, all donations have to be made public.

Ben in Oakland – I used the handy, dandy LA Times search tool, located here to lookup some of these celebs and see how much, if any, they have donated to FIGHT Prop. 8!

From your list:

David Geffen – $50,000 (Oppose)
Barbra Streisand – $0 (No records found)
Oprah Winfrey – $0 (No records found)
Patrick Knight – $0 (No records found)
Neil Patrick Harris – $0 (No records found)
Steven Spielberg – $0 (No records found)
Tony Kushner – $0 (No records found)
William (Bill) Gates – $0 (No records found)
Melissa Etheridge – $0 (No records found)
Rosie O’Donnell – $0 (No records found)
George Takei – $100 (Oppose)
George Takei – $2,500 (Oppose)

Wow! Pretty sad list! Either they are all broke, doubt it, they are waiting until the last minute, doubt that too, or they want others to give.

Well, at least I feel better about myself now that I looked all of this up! Because even though I am currently unemployed (thanks to ASU for laying me off last month!!!) I gave money to FIGHT Prop. 8 in California, Prop. 102 in Arizona and Amendment 2 in Florida! Which is more than these “celebs” can say!

Eddie89

September 18th, 2008

Although, I wonder if the people that give money to HRC do not show up on this list? Because HRC would then be the one making the contribution. Even though it was made up of money that came from other people.

Maybe that’s what’s happened here?

I prefered to give my money directly to the cause, because I don’t like how HRC siphons off some of the funding for their own operating costs and Joe’s salary, over $250k per year!

Eddie89

September 18th, 2008

Ok, I do have to give some props to HRC. I looked them up and this is what I found:

California Prop. 8:
HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN – $237,409 (Oppose)

October 9th, 2008

Well, add T.R. Knight to the list! He just donated $50,000 to “NO” on Prop. 8!

From the Advocate:

California – Vote “NO” on Prop. 8!
Arizona – Vote “NO” on Prop. 102! AGAIN!
Florida – Vote “NO” on Amendment 2!

I pity and pray for the simple minded, who are either enslaved to the sin of homosexual behavior or support the ludicrous notion that homosexuals should be able to marry or adopt. Their thinking is nothing more then mere folly, as a man made marriage contract will never legitimize the perverse behavior in the eyes of a Holy and Righteous God.

Neither will naming a detestable, immoral and perverse behavior as “being gay.”

One cannot argue ignorance in this matter, for God’s word revealed to us over two thousand years ago: “Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”

FACT: The only fruit homosexual unions are capable of producing is disease and death. Consider the weight of the evidence produced by the AIDS and HIV pandemic.

Scriptural Truth will always trump political correctness.

JustJohn (is that a reference to “Just Jack”?),

Thank you for your comment. Occasionally we forget the hatred that lives in the heart of those who seek to use religion as a club to attack and condemn others and comments like yours remind us that we are fighting a true evil.

May God have mercy on you.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings.
