The University used to be located on a piece of land around 104th and Vermont is South Central Los Angeles, which was the epicenter of the Watts riots. A couple of years after the riots, a very spooked Pepperdine hiked up its racist skirts and fled to white, rich Malibu. The other universities in the area hunkered down and decided that they needed to be part of a community and started working toward improving conditions for everyone. Only Pepperdine fled.
