Today the last of Florida's major newspapers advised a "NO" vote on Amendment 2. The conservative Jacksonville Times-Union (circulation 144,391) finally came out against the Amendment. Per my last post now all of Florida's major newspapers with a combined circulation of almost 2.4 million have unanimously recommended a "NO" vote.

At this point there is only one major Florida newspaper that has not made a "NO" recommendation on Amendment 2. That newspaper is the Florida Times-Union - average circulation 144,391 (Jacksonville). They have not made any recommendation at this juncture. Jacksonville is in Northeast Florida (on the Atlantic Coast) just south of the Georgia state line. It generally votes Republican.

I thought it would also be interesting to post the circulation of the Florida newspapers that have recommended a "NO" vote.

St. Petersburg Times 316,007
Miami Herald 240,223
Orlando Sentinel 227,593
Tampa Tribune 220,522
Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel 218,286
Palm Beach Post 164,474
Sarasota Herald 114,904
TC Palm News 108,781
Daytona Beach News Journal 99,627
Ft. Myers News Press 92,340
Florida Today 79,499
Naples Daily News 66,272
Lakeland Ledger 65,948
Tallahassee Democrat 49,939
Bradenton Herald 48,618
Ocala Star Banner 45,424
Gainesville Sun 44,658
Panama City News-Herald 30,829

Total 2,233,944

It is nice to know that all of Florida's major newspapers (with the exception of Jacksonville) with a combined circulation of over 2.23 million people recommend voting "NO" on Amendment 2.

Panama City is located in the historically conservative Panhandle of Florida about 60 miles west of Tallahassee. It is generally a bastion of conservatism. The Panama City News-Herald recommends a "NO" vote on Amendment 2.

Though not a newspaper it is also important to note the Florida NAACP opposes amendment 2.

"We are against Amendment 2, and our reason is the amendment would allow a way for discriminatory practices to be used," said Adori Obi Nweze, president of the state conference. The NAACP "has been around for 99 years fighting discrimination in this country. It makes no sense we still have to face it in these times."

The newspaper of West Palm Beach, The Palm Beach Post, has recommended a "NO" vote on Amendment 2. Palm Beach/West Palm Beach is the 3rd largest metropolitan area in South Florida behind Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.

Also, the Tampa Tribune recommends a "NO" vote. Tampa is the largest city on the west coast of Florida. (The Tampa Tribune endorsed John McCain for President.)

The Bradenton Herald also recommends voting "NO." Bradenton is a conservative community south of St. Petersburg and north of Sarasota on Florida's West Coast. It has voted Republican in the past 8 Presidential elections.

Thanks Anon.

The Naples News and Jacksonville links are to individual op-eds rather than recommendations by the editorial boards. But the Gainsville, Panama City and Lakeland papers are good finds. Thanks.
