In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. The Bradenton Herald also recommends voting “NO.” Bradenton is a conservative community south of St. Petersburg and north of Sarasota on Florida’s West Coast. It has voted Republican in the past 8 Presidential elections.

Also, the Tampa Tribune recommends a “NO” vote. Tampa is the largest city on the west coast of Florida. (The Tampa Tribune endorsed John McCain for President.)

Florida Today, the only newspaper of Florida’s central east coast including the cities of Indialantic, Indian Harbour, Melbourne, and Merritt Island recommends voting “NO” on amendment 2.

The newspaper of West Palm Beach, The Palm Beach Post, has recommended a “NO” vote on Amendment 2. Palm Beach/West Palm Beach is the 3rd largest metropolitan area in South Florida behind Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.

Though not a newspaper it is also important to note the Florida NAACP opposes amendment 2.
“We are against Amendment 2, and our reason is the amendment would allow a way for discriminatory practices to be used,” said Adori Obi Nweze, president of the state conference. The NAACP “has been around for 99 years fighting discrimination in this country. It makes no sense we still have to face it in these times.”

Panama City is located in the historically conservative Panhandle of Florida about 60 miles west of Tallahassee. It is generally a bastion of conservatism. The Panama City News-Herald recommends a “NO” vote on Amendment 2.

At this point there is only one major Florida newspaper that has not made a “NO” recommendation on Amendment 2. That newspaper is the Florida Times-Union – average circulation 144,391 (Jacksonville). They have not made any recommendation at this juncture. Jacksonville is in Northeast Florida (on the Atlantic Coast) just south of the Georgia state line. It generally votes Republican.
I thought it would also be interesting to post the circulation of the Florida newspapers that have recommended a “NO” vote.

Today the last of Florida’s major newspapers advised a “NO” vote on Amendment 2. The conservative Jacksonville Times-Union (circulation 144,391) finally came out against the Amendment. Per my last post now all of Florida’s major newspapers with a combined circulation of almost 2.4 million have unanimously recommended a “NO” vote.
