I've been buying Pepsi instead of Coke ever since I saw they donated to the No on 8 campaign. Pepsi and Coke are the exact same thing anyway.

Stefano-Yeah, my main point was we don't have to feel even the slightest twinge of guilt over not eating at McDonald's. Telling yourself that you're eating a Big Mac to fight the AFA is no excuse either, people!

As you make clear, the AFA declared victory over a non-event. I guess that's one way to rack up "wins" when your boycotts are generally ignored far and wide (except as objects of mockery).

As far as the point about McDonald's not being part of the NGLCC, you're correct, it was just one company officer who served on the NGLCC board and he did not do it in any kind of official capacity. I should've made clearer that the extent of the company's direct involvement was donating $20,000 to help sponsor a fundraiser which they don't plan to do again next year.

Also, it's worth noting that McDonald's still includes sexual orientation in its non-discrimnation policy and has at least one statement on its website touting it's inclusion in HRC's “Buying for Equality” guide. They're "neutral" in the sense that they don't discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. I can live with that kind of neutrality! Please just don't ask me to eat there...

Werdna:

I get this part "For the record, you can stop eating at McDonald’s to spite the AFA..." as they ended the Boycott.

I'm still waking up and a bit groggy so I guess I wasn't debating any point you made, just commenting on the nature of the boycott itself. (LOL)

Werdna:

I may be misunderstanding your point, but McDonald's was never involved, i.e. "aligned", with the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce in the first place.

Richard Ellis joined the GLCC as a personal decision outside of any role he held with his employer McDonald's, just as the reason he resigned from the GLCC was that the GLCC is a US organization and he accepted a new position with McDonald's in Canada.

What McDonald's was "aligned" with was Richard Ellis, their employee, and his right as an individual to be involved in the GLCC as a matter of personal choice.

The whole AFA brouha was AFA saying because Ellis worked for McDonald's the corporation was a member of the GLCC.

Also, pay careful attention to the wording by McDonald's in that first quote.

as defined by the American Family Association

McDonald's has a rather different take on why they support diversity and inclusion than as defined by the AFA as a "homosexual agenda". McDonald's defines their support of diversion and inclusion in the workplace as that of civil rights.

For the record, you can stop eating at McDonald's to spite the AFA: the restaurant chain seem to have decided not to renew their membership in the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. AFA has declared victory and has resumed stuffing their faces with cheap burgers, sodas and fries.

Newsy articles here, here, and here.

From the Lifesitenews article:

In an email to its franchise owners, McDonald's said, "It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald's remains neutral on same sex marriage or any 'homosexual agenda' as defined by the American Family Association.

Given the source (biased "news" sites via the AFA) I'm not sure how much faith I'd put in the accuracy of the quoted email.

Real(er) news item here.

The economic impact of the boycott is unclear; McDonald’s sales have continued to be strong. But Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, said the boycott was a success. “The fact of the matter is they’ve done what we’ve asked them to do,” he said.

Take a look here:
http://www.pepsico.com/PEP_Company/BrandsCompanies/index.cfm

Each subdivision has it's own list of products and brands. They include Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Quaker products.

You'll have to click on each brand on the top left to get the list of products.

A few of the more healthy options of support:

Aquafina - Water

Lipton Brisk, Ice Teas

Ocean Spray juices

SoBe juice drinks

Tropicana Lemonade, Twister, and punches

LIFE Cereal

King Vitamin Cereal

Rice-A-Roni (depends on how you cook it)

Baked Lays

There's more, I just thought this list would be a good way to point out it isn't exclusively junkfood. There are some healthier options.

Why can’t they boycott cool stuff?

Maybe their real goal is to ruin our health? If so, watch for a Krispy Kreme boycott any day now...

HappyCat, thanks for the heads up, but it still felt wonderful to blame Donald Wildmon's face for the recession.

I hardly ever drink soda anyway, and when I do (once a week at most), I limit myself to a can of ginger ale.

It is better to just send your own E mail. E-mails from the AFA site actually count as those that support the AFA as what is actuelly written isn't read.

Hey, I lucked out on this one, I am a Pepsi Drinker. I feel for my Coke drinking Friends. But I am right there with you on the McDaonalds, And the Clown caved.

Strange. They're planning yet another boycott (which they've been doing roughly month for the past decade or more) and it's "standing up for what they believe in". Yet we who are boycotting businesses because they, their owners or other high-ranking officials donated to "Yes-on-8", are intolerant haters who want to ruin businesses.

The "logic" of some people astounds me.
