Central High School is one of the most accepting high schools on earth and I can vouch for that as a graduate. Aside from any religious differences I or any Central student may have concerning the Westboro Baptist clan, this school has the most diverse group of young people I have yet to be involved with that will stand up for each others beliefs and opinions. Although I graduated a while before this happened, I will stand up for those who were able to participate and say they are far from "mindless illiterate raging brats." I really hate getting into this, but if you feel so strongly that the students were "all riled up and trying to attack the peaceful kind-hearted prophets of God," then it may have been a mistake to step foot on Central's campus in the first place.

TJ,

"Now, Emily, you know the Phelpses’d so fail being Jewish."

I'm not really sure what you mean by that. I assume you mean they don't follow the 613 mitzvot.

I definitely don't follow "all those rules" - most Jews I know don't. But that doesn't limit their participation with the Divine. The "rules" don't operate in the way that G-d marks a strike against you for each rule you "break." Rather, it's a positive build-up - each "rule" is considered a way to get closer to G-d, sometimes in a way one might not understand. That is what I was taught.

the belief that the Jewish G-d is vengeful and hateful compared to the Christian G-d has fueled anti-Judaic actions and attitudes since... the 2nd century. I don't expect people outside the faith - people outside studying the Torah the way Jews do - to understand how we could call G-d loving, but the majority of us are certainly not literalists, and honestly - without studying the Oral Law along with the "Old" Testament - people will be especially in the dark about that scripture.

As for getting away with things - the "bad" not being punished, the "good" not being rewarded, etc - well shit, that's a problem the whole human race has yet to understand, but we sure as hell try.

Seriously though, I wonder why anti-religious people - those who actively speak out against religion - seem to slink away as soon as I ask them to tell me what is evil about the Jewish religion. Maybe because we've been associated with the Devil by the Christian world for so many centuries they decide to give us a "break." Whatever.

Oops, I mean "If you manage to follow..." not "If you don't..."

Well, either way you're getting away with it.

Now, Emily, you know the Phelpses'd so fail being Jewish.

You do have to admit, however, Old Testy G-d is way vengeful and not one to piss off. In my mind, if you don't manage to follow all those rules and not get smote, you've earned the right to inherit whatever you want!

Hi Maggie, Long time fan of the WBC Church. I think it great that you posted here on BTB.

I was just wondering how the WBC feels about people like Peter LeBarbera and James Dobson?

Do you feel they are using GOD to profit by taking money from others?

Do you feel they represent GOD in a way that should make you proud?

We know that Peter LeBarbera reads here at BTB as well as James Dobson. Could you leave them a message here at BTB for them to read. We know if you post on one of their sites, they delete it before anyone can read your great insight. A message to them posted here addressed to them wont be deleted.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you had a happy thanksgiving.

SuzyQ,

Interestingly, the Phelps don't homeschool. Their poor kids go to public schools where they are shunned and don't have any friends. A Brit did a documentary about them that was posted on Queerty within the last week that painted both a disturbing and sad picture of the family, especially the young ones.

TJ,

since I only worship the "Old Testament" "vengeful" G-d, I guess that makes me no better than the Phelps's. From me and all my fellow Hebes, thanks!

The Phelps Klan are nothing but a bunch of inbred shit throwing flying monkeys that prove there is no god.

Sending them off to Saudi Arabia or some other place where their faith based hatred is the norm would be good riddance.

Putting them in a zoo would provide much amusement.

Just goes to show where home schooling leads.

Thanks, AJD. I’m not new to the game. I just find it fun to compare their behavior to ways the book they’re always thumping on and waving around actually says. Be it for the joys of exposing unabashed selfcontradiction, for public edification, or something. :)

I’ve been involved in gay marriage activism for five years. I have given the anti argument and its activists every chance to make their best case. As everyone now realizes there is no morally upright argument for their position. And when you talk to the serious ones in person, they do get that glint in their eye that racists and antifeminists get when engaged in that ugliness. They inwardly know they are wrong, but there is some horrible maudlin form of crookedness and ego in them that they can usually suppress but which finds its opportunity in that moment and takes over. Margie’s post here is an excellent unvarnished example of exactly that.
