In reply to: <a href="http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2008/12/10/7236#comment-27278" rel="nofollow">Comment 27278</a>

What a bad way for them to show they care.

If they (the mormons/BYU Admin.) are anything like 'cowboy' cites that they are; ( <a href="http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2008/12/10/7236#comment-27262" rel="nofollow">See comment 27262</a> ) They still might have some work to do to get to the point of being "supportive" of the gay community. Especially after all this bad publicity. I really doubt they have supported Gays all along.

I think this is just a way for them to come back after all this bad publicity from Prop. 8 to say....see we support the gay community.

I think that Mormon leadership is getting the idea that their highly visible foray into politics is not helping the effort of the LDS Church's mission.

It was just plain wrong that BYU would remove a tasteful student photo-art exhibition that otherwise didn't even break the surface of the school honor code. They realized the mistake, and reversed it. I would not read any more into it than that.

As for the work itself, if its photo-artistic excellence lives up to the objective it set for itself, people are in for a great art experience. No matter what, congratulations to Michael for having the courage to produce his project and I hope it scores well with any exhibit jury that may be impanelled.

The honor code in question:

Apparently, beards are not acceptable on men, ever. I'm guessing they wouldn't want them on women, either.

I'm pleasantly surprised.

In a 1966 speech, BYU President Ernest L. Wilkinson asked all gay students to leave BYU "immediately." "We do not want others on this campus to be contaminated by your presence," he explained.

I thought vestiges of his ghost still lingers in the hallways of BYU.

But, I'm happy for the change of heart. Surprised...but happy.

I'm very surprised they changed their mind. Perhaps there is hope for the anti-gay religionists, it seems some of the worst are slowly getting the feeling that being anti-gay is becoming socially unacceptable.
