I'm starting to look at this whole Rick Warren business as a good thing. The more national scrutiny this guy is under, the more credibility he will eventually lose among evangelicals.

My jaw dropped. What ever it takes...Hitler we are yours...Did Warren forget that he is NOT God? These people won't read their Bibles. They will follow the shepherd, Warren, and that should freeze you in your tracks. God Help us.

I think Jim starts with a wrong premise, about faith in the first place.

This Nuremberg Rally speech beautifully answers that silly point made by the pro-religionists, who justify the need for god by saying 'look at the genocide caused by atheists like mao and stalin'.

Actually, the point is this: while ever the act of worshipping is seen as a virtue, the temptation to totalitarianism, fanaticism, fraud and to demagogy is always going to be there.

To Laura's point, what if he happens to call for feeding the poor and sheltering the homeless? Well, fine, let's hear it for Scientology and the Nation of Islam too, then, and all their good deeds.

What if he also invokes the ultimatum of Matthew 25:41, i.e. 'believe in me or go to hell'?, and which he has done in the past in reference to the Jews, whom he claims are denied salvation. And by the way, his greatest inspiration is the late Wallie Chriswell ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W.A._Criswell ) who blissfully looked forward to world destruction, like those nauseating novels by Tim LaHaye. People with views like that are a serious danger to the planet, especially with Iran on the verge of nuclear capability. **

Everyone, every philosophy and every belief should be treated with skepticism, questioning, ridicule if needs be. Including the belief that there can be no better morality than that of an eccentric preacher said to have lived in Palestine, 2000 years ago. Judge people's reputations by actions, not the other way round. We need a to build an informed society where people base their world views on reason, evidence, logic. That's the way to eliminate the Stalins and Pol Pots....

** The human race will be lucky to survive this century.

The critic is purposely missing Warren's point -- what these evil men did with a few committed followers, his followers can do the same for good. He's not telling his followers to go out and bash gays or anything - you don't even know what he's planning. What if he tells them to all go out and feed the homeless? Just because he's powerful doesn't mean he's bad, and just because he uses the word "Hitler" doesn't make him a facist. I am not a fan of this guy, but if we cease being reasonable and balanced, we are no better than those who really are facists.

Okay I think its time to take a deep breath here, look a bit deeper and understand what is going on. I'm not a big Rick Warren fan, but anyone with even a basic understanding of Evangelical tradition will understand that Warren is not advocating the violent take over of society.

Remember that this is a heavily edited video clip, which I think deliberately conceals context.

One of the things I like about this site is that the writer help debuank selective reporting from conservative sources that smear the gay community. Lets not stoop to the same low standards in attacking back.

Jim I admire your work here tremendously, you can do better than this.

Hey, Ben in Oakland, Stalin didn't just "take over" from Lenin; he took power against the wishes of Lenin and totally distorted the vision that Lenin had for the socialist state.

The horrors committed under Stalin were not part of Lenin's plan nor were they extension of Lenin's philosophies.

We are finally starting to see a clearer picture of the gross power-lust and fascist-leaning tendencies of Rick Warren and the rest of the Christianist movement. When more is revealed, perhaps the rest of America will see him for the hate-filled snake-oil salesman that he truly is.

Like I said, I would enjoy watching the squirming if this thing became REALLY public, as in L.A. times, NY Times, boston globe.

Actually, the best place would be the Orange County Register.
