If I was an Acclaimed Gay Writer who made my living off of speaking to to gay groups, then it would be defamatory to claim that I'm straight. But, as best I can tell, Rita Cosby was just being a gossipy bitch. In which case it did Stern no harm. I think it depends on the context.
