Hi PGMT, I don't know Mel White's positions on life issues, but I, too, am curious, as I am gay, but also pro-life (in the true sense of the word).

I have never, EVER liked watching a straight person, or anyone whose life hasn't involved serious discrimination, lecture someone on what life is supposed to be or has been.

The claim of moral superiority is much easier to do from the position of not having it tested where it counts.

Tony Perkins fails on the simple level of not being or having to deal with living as gay in a heterosexually dominated world.
He is so smug, as if the 'Bible speaks for itself' is the end of the discussion.
And there is no need for anyone to speak in challenge to it.

Even if I remind a devout Christian who is anti gay, not only of the most important directive regarding treating another as you'd be treated, but also why it matters and the socio/political context of religious abuse in America towards other groups: they don't engage that fact.

Perkins is very willing to have gay people be the human sacrifice for his socio/political aspirations, but doesn't care about the damage the legacy has done already.
He completely chose to deny it even happens. Typical also of many of his ilk.

If a person has decided that a fellow human being is already dead to him, doesn't exist as a person to learn from, but to dictate to, then Perkins already lost his moral compass and obligation to the second directive of the savior he admires.

I find this arrogance and denial insufferable.
There aren't even any anti gay people when given the example of their style of conversation on this, I ask them if they are white men, would they argue they know more about racism and sexism than a black woman who has experienced such things over a lifetime.

So how could they lecture gay people so baldly on the facts of living as a gay person?

Since I know many do it anyway, trust me that my experience is also dismissed as someone with a bad attitude and to get over it.

Seems to me, that people like Perkins aren't invested in getting over their animus towards gay people, regardless of having nothing good to point to for their efforts.

I look at the pictures of those young boys who took their own lives and think of every child like them and wonder how to possibly reach someone like Perkins.

He'd see his own flesh and blood on the street too. No doubt.
We know that happens.
Charity for the poor, not for a gay person's orientation given by Creation.

But an epiphany about what gay CHILDREN or those suspected of it endure shouldn't come too late and after they are gone.

One would think after the Maggie Gallagher NOM blow-up, the religious right would avoid going on TV while the lies have truly been exposed. But, nope, here they are making fools of themselves some more. After mr. Brown from NOM was MIA on the ED show, I thought they would stay away.

Glad they decided to show up. I just hope they do more.

Hi, does anybody know Mel White's possition on abortion? From this video I imply he is pro-choice, but if he is, does he supports it only as a civil right? or also as a ligitimate moral choice?

I'm interested in this because I'm very pro-gay(if the term "pro-gay" makes any sense at all, considering it is actualy NOT a choice) but also very pro-life.

Whenever the Christians conservatives throw out the catch phrase about "the Bible speaks for itself" I start to cringe - painfully. The history of the transmission of the New Testament and the history behind the writing of the Gospels makes evident that if it is true these texts "speak for themselves" then very, very few understand the language. The average church-goer hasn't the foggiest notion of the culture of the first and second centuries which shaped the original, which was written mainly in Koine Greek (and Aramaic), and then translated over many decades into Latin and then copied by cloistered monks who had only a rudimentary understand of the languages. And then, the version which is most revered by many English-speaking people, was translated from inaccurate manuscripts and skewed by the political ambitions of King James. Also, Mel White is in a unique position to call these anti-gay 'christians' at their own game -- he knows them from the inside having been a ghost writer for members of that ilk. If these 'leaders' wish to wage their battle based on false witness (perjury), then they must also be willing to answer to the Highest Judge.

Rarely do television debates of this sort give an issue a thorough and fair discussion. Not in eight minutes. This is pure TV entertainment and nothing more. This “debate” ended with contention about whose facts are right and that was never resolved in spite of the issue being about the “END OF CHRISTIAN AMERICA?”

Plus, I cannot understand how the FRC think they speak for all Christians.
