Threat Assessment

This past weekend was Los Angeles’ gay pride parade and festival, Christopher Street West. And police presence was abundant.

Dozens of officers from various departments marched in the parade (accompanied the LA Chief of Police) and dozens more Sheriff’s Deputies were present to control traffic, keep the parade route clear, and be a general visible presence of order.

But I noticed something unusual this year. Some deputies seemed to be wearing bullet proof vests.

So I asked a deputy, “Why are you wearing vests? Are you concerned that gay folks are going to be a threat?”

And he responded, “No. It’s not the gays we’re concerned about. It’s those knuckleheads”.

And then I realized that the only deputies wearing protective gear were those lingering around the nine street preachers that had shown up to protest the parade.

In a time of increased violence from extremists, it’s nice to see a police force taking the threat against our lives seriously.

I am so over those holy rollers who show up wherever a number of gay people will be.
I NEVER see them where gang members are, around the divorce courts, the mandatory counseling for men who have committed domestic violence or the central jail.
NEVER.
I don’t even see them when the Erotica Expo shows up every June at the Convention Center. That doesn’t even attract Peter La. Be.
I don’t see them picketing Gentlemen’s Clubs or Trashy Lingerie or harassing those who enter those places.

They have all the free access to assemble in front of these places. Picket and shout at all THOSE sinners.
They can exercise their right to free speech and peaceful assembly wherever smut peddling and criminals gather.

Wonder what’s stopping them?

Being so comfortable with confronting gay people contradicts how the opposition portrays gay men and women as threatening.

Another youngster got his life blown away by gang members last week. He was thirteen.

I don’t like hearing the term ‘shoving it down our throats’, but really…

When people bury their kids over gang warfare while these wimpy faith shouters target gay people…I DO want to take that bullhorn and shove it down their throats!

So much for all of the whining about how “Militant Homosexuals” are targeting righteous Christians. Law enforcement officials know who the real threats are.

I agree: It’s good that the cops are willing to protect us, especially considering the history we’ve had with them in cities like LA.

Actually, AJD, West Hollywood contracts with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department for it’s police. The L.A.P.D. still isn’t trusted by most gays and lesbians here.

Wow, okay, so not much has changed, then.

Regan’s comments made me think about how, in Nashville, TN the “holy rollers” have been known to protest a lot of kooky things. They’ve protested a statue of Athena in the city’s replica of the Parthenon as a “pagan image”. They’ve protested a public sculpture (done by the same artist who did Athena) called “Musica” because it’s a group of nude people dancing. They protested when the original production of Jesus Christ Superstar came here. And yet things like the Hustler Store (on Church Street!) have barely registered.

Of course the Pride Fest is taking place in Riverfront Park this weekend, so I’m sure the “holy rollers” will be out in force.

I think were all missing the real issue with that picture: They have billboards for Squidbillies?

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
