Some Jews say the soil in Poland is red with Jewish blood. I'm lucky that most of my ancestors emigrated to America before the Wars. Although I've heard that it is easier to be Jewish today, and that there are many laypeople who are even genuinely curious about Jewish customs and culture, rather than automatically vitriolic and suspicious. And Katz might be an anomaly in Poland, but a gay rabbi isn't much of an anomaly in the Reform sect. :-) The Holocaust decimated our numbers there.
