Most of the American public supports open service. The hearing proved how many service members already know their colleagues are gay and don't care. The coalition forces from Britain and so on have had openly gay service members for years, and gay and lesbian soldiers live and work in these close environments and don't validate the impetus for the policy in the first place. Isn't all this proven to be way past academic as it is? All this and STILL the tippy toe around an all out repeal? So just WHAT will it take? How many speaking against DADT will it take? He was one of the most outspoken members of the committee that held hearings on DADT last summer. During the testimony by Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness, he used every word he could think of that came just short of calling her an arrogant, ignorant, pompous homophobe. I watched it on C-SPAN. It was one of the rare times I have actually stood up and cheered a politician during a newscast. I've always thought that this issue was best left up to gay vets and their allies to push forward instead of civilian activists. He makes a very important point in why the POTUS has proceeded in the fashion he has: the law was enacted by Congress, it is by the authority of Congress that it must be repealed.
