Goodbye, Fierce Advocate

365gay.com has compiled a comprehensive list of accomplishments by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy on behalf of the LGBT Community. Scanning the list, it becomes clear that the gay community had no better friend in either house of Congress than in Sen. Kennedy. From championing efforts to provide basic HIV/AIDS care in the 1980s when Sen. Jesse Helms and others were proposing quarantines and concentration camps, to insuring the American with Disabilities Act covered individuals with HIV, to standing firm against efforts to write discrimination into the federal constitution, Sen. Kennedy was out in front — often way out ahead of everyone else in leading the way for equality. That’s what a fierce advocate really looks like. The Lion leaves behind an empty den. He will be sorely missed.

Teddy was one of the few real giants of our time. Despite personal and political sorrow, he rose to be a formidable statesman. Let us all pray for the comfort of his family and pray that the gapping hole he leaves in the nation my soon be claimed by a new champion of justice.

May Ted’s bold leadership inspire our generation and the next to rise up and fill such shoes as his. May his legacy not go unfulfilled in these times when undaunted leadership such as his is sorely needed. May he smile down upon us as we go forth and carry that torch of liberty into the dark corners that need it most. And may we succeed in those efforts that he began, so that our children are uplifted to a place he could only dream of.

Well, maybe Obama should receive this list and be told: This is how a fierce advocate looks like.

Maybe then he will get his head out of his ass and realize that there is nothing on advocate, let alone fierce about him and his relationship with the GLBT community

While I didn’t agree with him on a lot of stuff, he was an ally on most of the things that really counted personally..

This is absolutely what a fierce advocate looks like. We are all the better for his tireless work, and we’re all the sadder to say goodbye.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
