It was just last year when proponents of Prop 102, Arizona’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage promised — pretty please promised — that unlike their earlier unsuccessful effort in 2006, this time they learned their lesson and have no intention of going after domestic partnership benefits in order to get the gays fully discriminated in the state constitution. Crossed their heart and hoped to die, in fact.
Well Arizona’s new budget is in, and it proves the lie. Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has signed the budget bill that strips health insurance from the families of approximately 800 Arizona state employees, along with other domestic partnership benefits. Now how’s that for pro-family politics?

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. And once again “separate but equal” shows its true colors.
Consider how the budget still isn’t balanced and this was probably pennies compared to other wasteful spending, the only rationale behind this is malice.

As a citizen of the State of Arizona, I am disgusted by this. I am, however, not surprised in the slightest. This reminds me of what Jennifer Grandholm (sp?) of Michigan did — albeit with her hand forced — on a much larger scale after the anti same-sex marriage amendment passed in her state.
The original statements and the actual intentions of those behind these anti-gay measures are NEVER equal.

Well of course. Gay folk get the “special right” of giving up health insurance so that heterosexuals don’t have to.
It’s things like this that drive me up the wall. Some day society will look back and see this for exactly what it is, heterosexism at it’s plainest. They would NEVER ask their hetero employees to accept such a cut.

Most or all businesses in CA are required to offer spouse/domestic partner health insurance if they offer it to their employees, but they are not required to pay for it. The state of AZ could have continued to offer insurance for spouses and domestic partners, but required employees to pay for it themselves. Maybe not the ideal situation, but it would at least be fair.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that if a CA Company pays for heterosexual spouse insurance, they can’t refuse to pay for same-sex spouse/DP insurance.
Fair is when heteros and gays are treated the same.

The marriage of same-sex couples must be indistinguishable from the marriage of opposite-sex couples under the law.
Anything that tends to make them distinguishable from each other permits them to be treated differently.
Domestic partnership is not the same as marriage and can be treated differently, (read “less”).
If you are opposed to same-sex marriage, don’t marry someone of the same sex, but do not prevent others who dream of doing so.
America was never a country who tried to squash dreams.
