Thanks for this. I am a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary in nearby Wilmore, Kentucky so I have visited the Shaker village in Pleasant Hill many times — but, it was long long ago. Your reflections bring back pleasant memories.

If I remember correctly, I once read a book (recently published) about the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake.

I too recall Copeland's "Appalachian Spring" melody, dervied from "Simple Gifts". There are also some hymns dervied from that tune as well.

Curious about the twin staircases. Do I guess right that they went to the separate men's and women's dormitories?

What a wonderful mediation for a late summer Sunday! I have two strong associations with "Simple Gifts", one shared by many and a second by just a few. First is the timeless gift given thru the genius of Martha Graham and Aaron Copeland in the dance production, "Appalachian Spring". The second is from a church gathering many years ago at which a husband and wife came as guest musicians. They sang and accompanied themselves on Appalachian dulcimers. I can only imagine that this was as close as you could hope to come to the original Shaker experience.
