Kissing Scandal Update: Mormon Church Changes Signs

Timothy Kincaid

September 28th, 2009

As a result of the public response to the manhandling and roughing up of two gay men who shared a kiss in an open-access plaza owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons), the Church has updated the signage on the plaza. It now says

Private Property
The Church reserves the right to refuse access to any person for any reason.

Like, oh I don’t know, being gay?

To be fair, if they spelled out all the dumbass reasons they’d kick someone out, it’d be one pretty big sign.

But seriously, putting a list would just encourage people to push the limits with things not on the list.

They could have picked up one of those “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone” signs some restaurants once had hanging behind the counter and saved themselves some money…

If it’s indeed private property then it’s a fair sign. They could kick people out for being gay, or for wearing a shirt that mocks “magic underwear.” Just like a person who enters a synagogue can be told to leave the building if they are eating treif (non-kosher food), which is not allowed to be brought inside.

The new sign ain’t gonna help the church’s PR problems. All the tourists visiting the LDS temple grounds are going to read that essentially “all are not welcome here.”

Which is what the cult wants, Howller…

I’d like to see them “refuse access” to African-Americans. Ooooh wait that’s right their Prophet of God had a revelation from God around the Civil Rights Era in which God said it was now okay for African-Americans to be invited to the church. Praise Baby Jesus that their word of god never changes. I mean what would the world think if they just changed the rules to fit with the times….

Well…if it were not for BTB I would not have known about this. I went to KSL TV (NBC) website for more information (okay…truthfully, I wanted to read the public comments which usually are filled with hundreds of vitriolic statements.) But, guess what…nothing. Not a peep or even a reference to this change on the signs surrounding the Temple grounds. Why was it not newsworthy?

Could it be KSL is owned by the LDS (Mormons) and they wanted to quietly let this change go unnoticed?

Thanks BTB, for keeping me informed.

Looking back now to 1999 and all the rancor, the debates, the backroom deals and the assurances to the public about this Main Street “deal”, I get the conclusion: What the Mormons want they usually get…no matter what. They got exactly what they wanted. This little piece of real estate cost them millions of dollars. This made some lawyers and a few people in some public relations staff wealthier. And, this has revealed much more about the inner-workings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Oh and that they made enemies of a bunch of faeries is just collateral damage…to them.

Update: KSL.com has posted a blurb about the sign change.

…wait a second! They allow ‘non-whites’ in the sacred temple? But my dad quit being Southern Baptist cause the mormons were still all white.

Sides, how many non-whites have you ever seen in the mormon tabernacle choir? Looks all white to me.

The Mormon Church is just as much a hate group as any other. It’s time for them to stop getting a pass just because they are a church too.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
