Fascinating doesn't begin to describe this occurrence in history. The photo you all chose to accompany this post is priceless. It all says so much and yet I don't know exactly what.

Thank you.

As someone who thinks that free-market capitalism is a liberal idea, reading "he’s quite conservative in his economic policies" makes my teeth itch. Yes, I know others operate on a different cultural axis, I still wish to point this out.

westerwelle's homosexuality had been an often laughed-at "secret" here in germany for many years of his political carreer. he just came out to public when he was absolutely sure that the risk to do so would be small enough – other politicians had paved the way.

the "18" at the soles of his boots were also rather ridiculous, even more so because the same number is a secret code for "adolf hitler" used by german neonazis (which westerwelle obviously didn't know).

his liberal party keeps on making nice promises to gays and, whenever it comes to a voting, they actually vote AGAINST gay rights. in a coalition with the conservative CDU (which rejects ANY further step towards equality) all the nice gay rights fairytales in the liberal party's program will be immedately thrown overboard, to concentrate on preparing the next neo-liberal catastrophy.

when asked about his homosexuality, westerwelle keeps emphasizing how very unimportant this topic is and how very well he separates his "bedroom" from his bureau - to calm anyone who'd expect any "gay politics" of him. so homosexuality is a question that should be kept in the "bedroom"?

no reason at all for a big cheer about this close-to-the-closet homo. i rather feel ashamed than proud to have this guy being one of "the family".

even though of course it is some nice signal to have an "openly" gay vice-chancellor, i don't expect any pro-gay politics from this clown.

He's gay, but it's his appearing on Big Brother and a lame campaign stunt that are controversial in Germany. Obviously "conservative" means very different things in different countries.
