I haven't been able to get over to see my cousins in the Dine, but I'm glad you got to commune with them, Jim.

Usually my travels around there are as an artist. There are some amazing weavers from that area.

   Thanks for the great article.
I have to give Tony Hillerman some props.
At least his crime novels about the folks from there manifest pretty well in his reservation police officer Jim Chee.

My family and I drove through that part of the world earlier this year, my second time in the States. Far too empty and dry for my Irish sensibilities, but there is a strange beauty to the landscape. I didn't meet many of the people.

I have been lucky enough to visit the land of the Dine twice with my parents and several times on my own or with friends when we explored the wonders of the back country. The stark beauty of the land has always only been outshined by the beauty of the people I have met there.

Though there was one time I was on my back home to Oklahoma from Salt Lake City that I decided to visit southeastern Utah, Monument Valley, Four Corners and Shiprock for what might have been my last time. I stopped at a small restaurant in Bluff just north of the rez and ordered a chef salad, 'but hold the broccoli,' I told the Dine woman who waited on me, saying that the president (GHW Bush) and I don't care for broccoli (it had recently been reported in the news). She laughed. I got it anyway!

Yeah, the drumming -does- sound like a heartbeat. I consider it the echo of the Earth's heart. It's a very soothing sound. (No, I'm not a Native, I just like the music.)

This brings back some memories. In '93 I did a one month externship at the tribal veterinary clinic in Window Rock. Never made it up to visit Shiprock, but I made a few trips out to hike and explore in Canyon de Chelly. As a confirmed East Coaster, I don't think I could ever live in the desert permanently, but it's really beautiful country and its people reflect that.
