Once again, pre-election polls, and exit polls don't mean a damned thing. Most bigots won't admit to being a bigot. Bigotry doesn't extend beyond the anonymity of the ballot box.

I hope you're right, Timothy. But I've been thinking that a high turnout would be bad for us. Outside of Maine's gays and most of their friends and family who will vote NO, I don't think many people are greatly motivated by the message of fairness and equality, even if they agree with it, to get off their asses and vote NO in an off-year election.

On the YES side, the hard-core bigots will be motivated to vote, and beyond them I think there is a large number who fear that treating gays fairly, equally, and decently could send a message to their children that choosing to be gay is okay. For parents who have that irrational fear and are ignorant of how their children may become gay, fairness and equality for gays is exactly what they don't want.

I hope I'm wrong.

About 2 hours until the polls close. Any idea if there are any exit polls out yet?
