Pepsi Responds To Reports of Murder Music Sponsorship In Uganda

Jim Burroway

December 7th, 2009

Pepsi has released a brief statement in response to reports that Pepsi sponsored a murder music concert by Beenie Man in Kampala over the weekend. Pepsi responded:

We are appalled by the performer\’s lyrics and find them repugnant.  Our bottling partner in Uganda was not aware of the performer\’s views and never would have sponsored the concert with this knowledge.  Moving forward, we will work closely with our bottling partners to be more vigilant about the events associated with our brands.”

And yes, our web site was down for a couple of hours this afternoon. All the traffic coming in concerning this story brought the web site’s host server to its knees. I’ve been on the phone with a very helpful service support person who talked me through several options. Hopefully things will return to normal in the next few days.

As uncouth as they may be, one of our guests did bring up a good point about the kneejerk reaction of boycotting, though. First of all it doesn’t get much done on its own. Second of all things aren’t as simple as Pepsi consciously promoting this sort of thing. As someone else mentioned, it probably didn’t occur to them to even look at the kind of music they were sponsoring, and this proves confirmation of that. Communicating our concerns and then making them accountable for future decisions is more productive than flinching at every bit of news.

Thanks for the heads-up on the site problem. I just about had a coronary over it because I’d **just** installed a Java update from Apple and thought it had blown my access BTB. Just goes to show how much I appreciate BTB.

Fight On!!!!

So glad this site’s gonna be okay.

So glad Pepsi responded quickly, too.

Thank you for bringing this important message to the masses (and to Pepsi’s attention). That the site was brought “to its knees” shows that you are doing important work and getting the truth out there. Thank you; I’m so glad to have found this website.

See what I told you? There was just a litle misunderstanding here. PepsiCo is firmly committed to promoting homosexuality. They may have slipped up a little bit here, probably because they didn’t know about the singer’s lyrics, but they want all homosexuals to know that they fully intend to kiss your asses for the rest of eternity. Let me reiterate–PepsiCo and the 99% of corporate America will do whatever homosexuals tell them to do.

What a relief. For a second there, I thought Pepsi was getting out of line. Good work, Boxturtle Bulletin!

Ben, you’d be much happier if you just learned to accept the fact that you’re gay. You can’t change that and wishing it were different to please the bigots will only make you miserable.

Readers,

Please don’t make wild and baseless speculation about the orientation of others.

First, it only discredits other more valuable things you have have to contribute.

And second, such accusations are based on the idea that being gay is a Shameful! Secret! and that exposure that someone is gay will reflect negatively on them. I don’t buy into that mindset and I hope our readers don’t either.

Besides, our community really doesn’t need any more folks who are self-loathing or homophobic, so please don’t associate our community with these folk.

Thanks.

Ben, are some sort of clever satirist? Because if you were, bravo.

Otherwise, it’s rather disturbing that you make light of the proposed murder of gay people.

Here I thought people in your camp thought life was precious and worth saving.

But I guess when it’s gay people, all bets are off, including logic, sympathy, compassion, the right to life, truth, the actual teachings of christ, etc, etc, etc.

Nothing matters except stopping the gays, huh, Ben? If someone wants us murdered, wants to write songs about murdering us, well that’s just fine. The whole “thou shalt not kill” thing doesn’t apply to the gays, does it, Ben?

Awesome analysis guys. I’ve got one commentor who knows that I’m actually a closeted, self-hating homosexual. I have another commentor who (again!) presumes to know my religious background and that my opinions are motivated by it.

Who said I’m for killing homosexuals? I’m not for any type of violence against homosexuals. Or anyone else, really. My point is that PepsiCo–and corporate America in general–will do anything to make homosexuals happy. I don’t know of any other special interest group so small that has so much power that they can snap their fingers and have the CEOs of Microsoft, Shell, PepsiCo, Target, McDonald’s, Subaru, etc doing whatever they want.

PepsiCo obviously didn’t know that this singer was singing about slitting homosexuals’ throats. It’s silly to think that they did. Now how much are you going to make them grovel before you accept their apology?

Yes, Ben, not wanting to support a musician who wants your customers killed is soooo PC.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International.
