GREAT column by Ms. Dvorak. She is a relatively recent addition to the Post's columnist ranks, and so far I've liked her writing - this one I love. She not only comes down on the side of justice, but she also sees clearly the nature of the relationship between Miller and Jenkins and it's equivalence to straight marriage. I especially loved that she brought up Jenkins' parents, who are both supportive of their daughter and heartbroken at having their grandaughter taken away from them.

I'm going to have to disagree with Timothy, though, on the favorite quote. Mine is this one:

Miller's relationship with Jenkins was an adult one, clear-eyed and far more considered than a boozy night of too many tequila shots and some back-seat action that results in a child.

That is spot-on! Miller and Jenkins didn't accidently become parents, they went into it with eyes open and with clear understanding of the commitment they were making.

Timothy,

Good points. Those both sound like likely possibilities.

I wonder if the police will be asking questions around the Liberty University school, if that is indeed where Isabella used to go. Like, for starters, exactly how long ago Isabella was pulled from classes.

Elise,

This is speculation on my part, but I suspect that Isabella was being educated at the school affiliated with Liberty University. That would explain no reporting of a child gone missing.

Further, I would not be surprised if Lisa is believing that God is going to miraculously cause the Virginia Supreme Court to decide that they will not enforce Vermont's court orders and thus thinks her disappearance is only short term.

I am really curious to know what Lisa Miller's long term plan is. Does she plan to adopt new identities for her and Isabella and try to reenter society and hope that the nobody ever recognizes them? Or does she just plan to continue living in hiding, shielded by whoever Miller's mysterious benefactors are and home schooling her daughter in an underground bunker until she turns eighteen (and perhaps beyond)?

Now that I think of it... isn't the latter pretty much a extremist fundamentalist parent's dream? And since we haven't heard anything about a school Isabella is missing from, I guess it's not such a stretch to assume that Isabella was already being home schooled before Miller took off with her.

Poor kid, completely socially isolated and now dragged god-knows-where on the lam with a mother who's convincing her that the whole big bad world is out to get them? Years of therapy doesn't even begin to cover it.

I don't know what else Petula Dvorak has written or what she looks like, but I am developing a crushlet on her right at this very moment. Thank you for sharing this.
