Deacon succinctly lays out Catholic objection to marriage equality

Timothy Kincaid

January 8th, 2010

Writing in Catholic Online, Deacon Keith Fournier laments that courts have treated Janet Jenkins with respect and honored the commitments that she and Lisa Miller made. In the midst of his tirade, is a sentence that epitomizes the attitudes of those who rally forth to oppose equality.

They want the State to treat homosexual partnerships as the equivalent of marriage, thereby denying real marriage and the family founded upon it, the favored legal place it has long held as the first society.

It is not that they wish to “preserve tradition” or “uphold the definition” or are “worried about the children”. Those are just subterfuges presented to the media to distract from the real reason.

No, they truly believe that they deserve a favored legal place and that our lives, our relationships and our very citizenship is inferior to their own.

It is somewhat ironic that this spew has echoes of the battle against inter-racial marriage – a battle which was also fought (and won) against the state of Virginia.

Male/female marriages won’t be any less favoured when gays are allowed to marry – we still favour marital relationships over all others.

BTW I love all the scare quotes in this story.

Marriage equality will not DENY us married folks anything. It will simply say that our neighbors are our equals. It stuns me that that concept is a threat to people who identify as followers of Jesus. Isn’t he the one who said the big rules are “Love God and love your neighbor”? How do they look at their neighbors and say, “Your family is less precious than mine.”?

That’s funny because I lament that religiously motivated speech hasn’t been outlawed for the fraud and lies that it is.

Whatever else he is, he’s honest. Gotta give him that. I actually kind of wish that others would stop blathering about “preserving the traditional family” and such, and take that sort of approach.

As someone who does guest lectures for local college classes, I *love* bringing up “traditional marriage”! I usually ask the single girls:

Just how much is your bride price?
Have you already been promised to another?
Are you here only to get your Mrs degree?
When you do get married, will you have as many kids your husband decrees as is his right?

*That’s* traditional marriage, my dears!

I was going to post this over there, just to see if they would post it. I’m always torn between trying to talk to these people and recognizing when one is ultimately talking to stone hearts.

—————-

Deacon Keith Fournier,

It’s sad to read your article.

By it’s own choice, the Church is absent in the lives of these two lesbians, withholding the kind of spiritual support and guidance that would value relationships over dissolution.

Yet, the Church NOW wants to be involved, against even the courts. How odd.

Open up your heart. Even though this is a tragic case, perhaps you can stop treating it as a exemplar of all that is wrong with gay couples. Truly, their problems are little different than non-gay couples. Open your heart, if you have ears to hear, because gay marriage is good for all marriage and divorce is painful for everyone. Stop being afraid of the “Cultural Revolution” wholesale and start understanding how much better and more obvious it would be if you were to embrace loving, committed relationships, than to so open scorn them.

If you cannot open your heart, then stand behind us, because the unexamined malice in your heart is showing. Truly, if society’s worst problem is two parents out of millions who care about their daughter, it is because your blindness has put priorities upside down. For one thing, how many heterosexual parents have physically destroyed their unwanted children, yet here you identify gays as the judicial threat to our national future. Please meditate on that. I’m sure that a right spirit will move you that that cannot be correct.

Perhaps your stipulation that “The record shows that Isabella is an ‘A’ student in school, a happy, well adjusted and loving child”, might be able to guide you farther. This was achieved while Isabella had but one parent, yes? Perhaps God’s wisdom is greater than your understanding, your doctrine? Two are better than one, but look what one alone has achieved.

And what if any student were gay or lesbian? Your Church would counsel them a life of celibacy/denial. Is it any wonder that even a non-involved parent would shudder at that unnatural teaching, in a society that has thriving, creative, and fully-functioning gay people and couples all around?

Last, you shouldn’t give yourself a pass on the fundamental injustice you appear to want to set-up, an injustice in which some couples can use fertility technology, yet others cannot.

Actually Amicus, the piece is even more disingenuous that you point out. As a former Catholic I can tell you that Ms. Miller’s current lifestyle choices – as a divorced single mother and as a member of an evangelical congregation – are not supported as moral by the Roman Catholic Church, but somehow Mr. Fornier conveniently ignores Miller’s sins, even as he lies about Jenkins (e.g., not mentioning her paying child support and claiming she has not tried to have contact with her child – both are patently false).

It is ironic that a Catholic writer would defend a fornicating heretic and blasphemer, but I guess the political attacks on LGBT Americans are more important than the petty religious differences among various Christian sects.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
