Despite Protest Ban, Hundreds of Ugandans Call For Killing Gays

Ugandan pastor Martin Ssempa defied a police ban against his planned “million man march” in support of the proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill scheduled for Wednesday by holding a quickly organized march in the city of Jinja yesterday.

Update: A reader in Uganda had provided us with a video clip of a news broadcast covering that march. But now, NTV’s Kenyan branch has posted the same report on their YouTube channel.

That Ssempa chose to defy the ban is interesting. Clearly, the ban on his planned demonstration for Kampala was ordered by the highest levels of government — one can rarely lose a bet on assuming such orders come directly from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. He has acknowledged coming under intense international pressure to shelve the bill and may be looking for ways to turn down the pressure.

But Ssempa has been the bill’s strongest supporter, even going so far as to defend its proposed death penalty for gays and lesbians under certain circumstances. So Ssempa responded to the demonstration ban by moving his planned march from Kampala to Jinja, Uganda’s second largest city about 50 miles to the east. Was this an act of defiance to try to make it politically impossible for Museveni to block or moderate the draconian legislation? Or was this the result of an unspoken compromise which allows the government to appear democratic (even though it routinely outlaws opposition rallies at will throughout the country) while keeping its fingerprints off its bill?

It’s just a matter of time before there is the blood on innocents in the streets of Uganda. And shortly after that people such as Ssempsa will be denouncing anyone who isn’t part of his mob as homosexual. Then political enemies will follow. When that begins what will our “fierce defender” and all the other spineless world leaders do?

There should be limitations on homosexual practices, which cause physical, psychological and spiritual pain. Research in the West makes it clear that homosexuality limits the quality of ones life. Many homosexuals have themselves been abused and are addicted. Legislation can help to stem the spread of this destructive practice or way of life which can be viewed as not just self-realisation but selfish realisation.

I believe though that killing people does not help. We all have shortcomings and need to help one another to be strong. Let God be our final judge.

Uganda should not listen to people who do not care about how corrupting homosexuality can be and how our school children are being hurt physically, emotionally and spiritually. Homosexuality destroys lives and families. I know. It has destroyed mine.

But let us not start killing each other. Let us lead the world by making laws that others can follow to reduce homosexuality. May we not make laws that just make things worse. All sinners, including ourselves, need mercy and understanding just as much as homosexuals.

KAY,

Your claims are untrue. The “research” that you reference is fraudulent and every mental heath organization disagrees with you.

There is no such thing as “addiction” to same-sex attraction nor can legislation change in any way the primary sexual orientation of any person, whether heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual.

It is unfortunate that you are choosing to wallow in ignorance, false presumptions, and biases. Choosing to blind yourself is crippling and, furthermore, is a grievous sin. You are selecting a path that denounces God’s grace and blasphemes Christ’s commandment to love your neighbor as yourself.

If you would have others lie about you, then continue in this manner. But if not, you are commanded by God to cease your lying.

i have something to tell all white folks around this world.Africa may be poor backward, war ridden, stinking diseased buuut!!! never IMMORAL. we Africans value our morals a lot even against freedom. so who ever is trying to stop Uganda from fighting homosexuality and being anti gay is fighting a losing battle. 99% of Ugandans don’t support any form of gay practices whatsoever. so white folks quit Uganda it is a sovereign nation and it should do whatever it feels as long as it is in the interest of the people.

Kay & Kibedi,

Have you ever noticed that the nations who are most accepting of their gay citizens are among the nations ranking highest in every measure of human well-being and prosperity? And have you noticed that the nations who treat gays with vile contempt are among the nations ranking lowest in those measures? Even within the United States a similar correlation can be seen (to some degree) among the states.

If the people of Uganda want to improve their lives, they might want to focus on education to reduce their ignorance, illiteracy, and superstition, rather than scapegoating gays as the solution to their problems. The scapegoating of unpopular minority groups has always been an effective way for people and/or their governments to deflect responsibility for their own failures.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
