The UK Conservatives realized that homophobia had become a millstone around their necks, so they kicked the homophobes out of their leadership and recruited a whole bunch of openly gay candidates. They look set to win big.

I hate to dampen your enthusiasm, although the situation is good, its not that good.

The Conservatives realised that their track record (including homophobia), from the last time they were in government, was a millstone around their neck. They embarqued on a process of changing their image, including electing a new and charismatic leader (David Cameron), embracing environmentalism and the climate change agenda, giving prominence to gay candidates (e.g. this list they have published). Most of these gay candidates were already active within the party before, rather than being ‘recruited’, although they and other ‘desirable candidates’ (from a PR perspective) were given support in getting selected to become actual official parliamentary candidates. Although homophobes were removed from the leadership, many of the old guard did remain in Parliament. However many of these are standing down at this election, but for other reasons.

The Tories are not set to ‘win big’. There is a strong chance of a hung Parliament, even if they win an overall majority it will be small. The last few elections have been terrible for the party that was the natural party of British Government, that added to the current state of the economy means that for the Tories to do only a bit better than at the last election would be a bad result.

The Democrats realized that regionalism had become a millstone around their necks, so they diversified their leadership and ran campaigns in all 50 states. They won big. The UK Conservatives realized that homophobia had become a millstone around their necks, so they kicked the homophobes out of their leadership and recruited a whole bunch of openly gay candidates. They look set to win big.

The Republicans went through the garbage, found the discarded millstones, and put them on around their necks.
