Tonight the West Valley City Council will discuss (and likely pass) employment and housing protections for their gay and lesbian residents. (Salt Lake Tribune)
Freshman Mayor Mike Winder urged the council, during a planning retreat in January, to take up the issue in 2010. On Monday, he said, residents have shared with him their experiences of being “evicted or fired” because of their sexual orientations.
“I’m a proud Republican and a proud American,” Winder said. “When I recite the Pledge of Allegiance and say ‘with liberty and justice for all,’ I mean what I say.”
Let’s hope that Winder continues to listen closely, and is joined by many more Christian Republicans who will listen closely to the words they pledge with their hand over their heart.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. I wonder if the Mormons will ‘support’ this one like they did in Salt Lake City.
Is the entire city council in agreement on this and is it statistically impossible for them to stop it even if they threw every single dollar they have at it? If so they probably will ‘support’ it. Now if only they’d ‘support’ equal rights for gay people in a place where it’s actually still being argued.

Every place where gay rights are championed is worth it. It’s another place we can point to and say “They respect gays there, and lightning did not strike them down, the earth did not open up and swallow them, the sky did not fall, babies are still being born, and people still live.”

This is the Mormon Church’s current M.O. – “Keep things quiet on the homefront, and divert attention.”
The LDS has an agenda currently to “give all appearances” of not being in the middle of Gay-related controversies.
The Mormon-Controlled Utah State Legislature recently halted proposed legislation banning pro-gay protections passed by local municipalities, in a specific attempt to keep the battle “out of our front yard”, but quietly continuing their campaigns against Marriage Equality in multiple other States via the National Organization for Marriage a.k.a. NOM as they emerge in those States’ Legislatures.
NOM campaign expenditures ammounted to Two-Thirds of All Monies Spent in the entire Maine campaign, outspending all others by twice, to keep Gays from having Marital rights. Nom is not even located in Maine, and they are not only under investigation for campaign finance fraud in Maine and California, but they have refused a Maine Court’s Order to turn over Legally Required records of Contributors to the court. When will they be held to the same level of justice as all other Americans?
Make no mistake that the Mormon Church is still the primary financeier of NOM, with Tax-Exempt Monies in defeating complete and full Marriage Equality for Gays under the United States Constitution.
