Of course, curent citizens cannot be deported and I would agree that families with minor age children should not be split up. But automatic birthright citizenship should be ended immediately.

Yes, of course we can’t deport 10 million people. But if we start enforcing the law seriously, millions will self deport.

Current proposals do require illegals here in the country to pay a fine/back taxes, but they can still stay in the United States! How is that fair to people who have obeyed the law?

Current Mexican citizens cannot easily become U.S. citizens unless they have family members who are citizens or have a particular high skilled job. A dishwasher in Mexico City with no close family here has essentially zero chance of becoming a citizen. I favor changing that.

Also deporting 10 million illegals is utterly impossible and stupidly expensive. It’s time to stop entertaining such complete nonsense. The proposal for amnesty is not unconditional. They have to pay back taxes and go to the back of the line for citizenship.

That said amnesty is a no go unless they change things so we don’t run into this mess again.

Mark, that sounds all well and good, but I would remind you that some of the illegals have kids who were born here and are therefore citizens. I’m not in favor of splitting up families and I absolutely am not in favor of stripping people of their citizenship (we don’t even do that to convicted felons) or deporting our citizens because of what their parents did.

Any immigration proposal which includes an amnesty for people already illegally in the United States is dead on arrival. Why should ten million people who broke the law be eligible for legal United States residency and citizenship when millions of others who may have wanted to come to the United States obeyed our laws?

I welcome the proposal to allow same sex partners of current citizens to immigrate, however.

But Democrats are really stupid beyond all belief if they think a proposal with amnesty will pass. Anyone in the country illegally should be deported and made to reapply for legal residency the same as anyone else — with no special treatment. Maybe we can liberalize the laws to make it easier. Or we should simply just open the borders.
