LaBarbera Says Gays and Ex-Gays Should Be Disqualified For Public Office

Peter LaBarbera asks a question straight out of the  McCarthy era while writing in the third person:

Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans For Family Values (www.rffv.org), urged potential Supreme Court pick Elena Kagan , Republican Reps. David Dreier and Patrick McHenry, and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist — each the subject of wide speculation that they practice(d) homosexuality — to answer the question: ‘Are (or were) you a practicing homosexual?[All emphases in the origianl]

Interesting question. It’s interesting not so much for the McCarthyesque turn of phrase at the end, but for what it reveals about LaBarbara’s attitude towards ex-gays as well as gay people. By lumping the past tense with the present tense as he does, LaBarbera makes it clear that as far as he’s concerned there’s no difference when it comes to discerning a candidate’s political and judicial qualifications. You’re equally damned if you do and damned if you stop.

Not surprising, really. While anti-gay extremists like LaBarbera finds ex-gays a convenient tool for their arsenal, deep down they don’t trust ex-gays any more than do people in the gay community. All that talk about “redemption”? It’s just talk, and there’s no better evidence for that than this.

Teh Peter’s just trolling in the event he sees one of them at his favourite hangout, um I mean “research” event, the Folsom Street Fair.

So called ex gays should take a very good, deep and cold look at this because this is the way people see them: as creatures worthy of contempt because they are still under the influence of some virus and could be contagious.

So, he has founded another organization. I guess he is trolling for more donations.

I see the parallel between ex-gays and Jews-for-Jesus: Some Jews may decide to become Christians, thinking society will treat them better; but in the end, many will still see them as “filthy Jews”.

Agreed.

If they really thought homosexuality could be “overcome” (with the help of groups like Exodus), instead of saying “formerly homosexual” (et al), they’d say “now heterosexual.”

Umm, Pete, we rejected a religious test for public office in this country over 2 centuries ago. You really need to get with the program and catch up on your American history. Perhaps you might want to consider actually acting to uphold the Constitution of the United States which is, after all, a duty of every American citizen. I’m afraid that will force you to put that sacred document of our country ahead of that other alleged sacred document of yours called the Bible which does not regulate our secular society. You are of course free to expatriate to any Islamic country that will have you if you are more interested in a theocracy than what we currently have in this country. If you do that, you might want to avoid letting the door bust you in the butt on the way out. Thanks!

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
