American anti-gay extremist Lou Engle joined several Ugandan pastors and political leaders in calling upon that nation’s government to enact the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill. As we already noted late last night, the New York Times quoted Lou Engle of TheCall this way:

“NGOs, the U.N., UNICEF, they are all coming in here and promoting an agenda,” Mr. Engle said, referring to nongovernmental organizations. “Today, America is losing its religious freedom. We are trying to restrain an agenda that is sweeping through the education system. Uganda has become ground zero.”

Engle also reportedly commended the Ugandan’s “courage” and “righteousness” in formulating the bill, which imposes the death sentence on gays under certain circumstances, criminalizes all speech and advocacy on behalf of gay people, and mandates that friends and family members report gay relatives and acquaintances to police.

The Moses Mulidwa of the Gay Activist Alliance Africa has more details about that rally. Mulidwa reports that Engle told the crowd, “We warned the youth against the act, when America allowed homosexuals freedom, it was the end of their Nation.”

Mulidwa also has some further information about other speakers at the rally:

Reports state that Pastor Mulinde of Trumpet Church called on other pastors present to come to the floor and pray for the nation of Uganda and in his prayer he condemned ‘evils in society’, committed by both homosexuals and heterosexuals.

He further emphasized that homosexuality is invading schools, families and the entire community and that it should be stopped.

Pastor John Mulinde is the founder of Kampala-based World Trumpet Mission, which is headed by founder John Mulinde. World Trumpet Mission also has extensive staff in Orlando, Florida under International Director Mark Daniel.

Another speaker at the rally was Pastor Julius Oyet. He was also present in the Ugandan Parliament on October 14 when the Anti-Homosexuality Bill was introduced. We have extensive information about Oyet’s role in this bill here. He also spoke at the rally:

Pastor Oyet Julius [sic] pointed out that Uganda is not for sale and that western civilization should not be allowed to take over the country.

“Members of parliament should not waste time by debating the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, they should quickly make it a law”, Oyet reportedly said.

He also called upon the cabinet, media, and business community to take a firm stand against homosexuality, also accusing homosexuals of paying school fees for young children while recruiting them to ‘the act’.

“Uganda cannot be intimidated by the Western World, we cannot put our dignity for sale” He said.

Mulidwa confirms that Ethics and Integrity Minister James Nsaba Buturo spoke at hte rally and declared that Parliament would be passing the bill “soon.” MP David Bahati, the bill’s sponsor, also attended the rally.

Oyet said: “Uganda cannot be intimidated by the Western World, we cannot put our dignity for sale” He said.

In this corrupt country, everything is for sale. I think that the EU and the US should put aide on hold until this crisis is resolved. That would give them a foretaste of what happens when there is no longer any money left in the aide pot for the Minister of Ethics and others to steal.

My worry is that if the U.S. and E.U. halt aide, the Ugandans will simply go crying to the Chinese, who will gladly give them development aide in exchange for access to natural resources, human rights be damned. Sanctions restricting Ugandan exports and investment in the country would be a better route.

I’d tend to allow the Ugandans to go to China. They are really not a threat as they are about as superstitious as a human can be, mostly muslim, and as ignorant as they come.

Sanctions against exports, yet investment in the country would be contradictions. If you invest, you do so to take them over from within. Who wants them?

Now, if you want to move them away from draconian superstitions that spring forth from a pseudo religion, then invest in EDUCATION.

Most UNfavored nation status.Cut the cash OFF. Cut off all trade. BAN ALL IMPORTS including products made with Ugandan sourced materials. Give emergency visas to gay/lesbian Ugandans. Then let the remaining “Christians” kill each other when the fighting begins over the lack of cash. Since the dawn of time they have been killing each other, that will not change anytime soon.

Tullow Oil an Anglo-Irish firm is the main player in Uganda’s oil fields in the Lake Albert Basin. But Tullow wants to bring in an Italian firm (Total) and a Chinese firm (China National Offshore Oil Corp – CNOOC) and supposedly Uganda has agreed. The Chinese firm has experience in handling and refining waxy oils (which the Ugandan oil is).

There was a report that Uganda was going to more or less give away drilling rights in a new round of leases this year to the largest, most-prosperous Russian Oil company, Lukoil. Supposedly, Uganda had made a deal to buy 6 Russian Sukhoi Su-30Mk2 multirole fighter jets ($300 million). And the oil rights were to sweeten the deal. Once that got out the Ugandan government started denying it all over the place. Though I read one ministers remarks which more or less said, ‘hey, why not.’ In short it appears that the Museveni government would rather buy weapons than care for the needs of his people.

“When America allowed homosexuals freedom, it was the end of their Nation.”

I’ve heard far too many people speak of the “historical fact” that every great civilization that embraces homosexuals will fall soon. Anyone know of any historian who makes that claim, or any good source that documents the alleged facts behind that claim?

In my day job I’m a research Archaeologist with the Smithson and I’ve never found any evidence that actually proves the claim that every great civilization embracing homosexuals soon falls … conversely though, I will point out it is a historical fact that after all religions except Christianity in the Roman Empire were prohibited in 391 AD by Emperor Theodosius I, the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410.

Yes, since Rome had been tolerate of homosexuality from its inception and it only took 19 years from total conversion to sacking, one could, if one wanted, make a very learned argument that it was Rome’s conversion to Christianity that was the final nail in the coffin for Roman civilization and not toleration of “da gays.”

justsearching,

If we consider that every ancient civilization has “fallen” by some definition or other, then it goes to prove that every civilization that “embraced homosexuality” (or danced the hokey pokey) eventually fell. Of course, so did those who didn’t “embrace homosexuality”.

Paula,

Thanks for the example that puts unto perspective the problem with assigning blame for the end of specific political entities.

No problem Tim,

I always love how people take historical events out of context to justify their current politics … because if you know your history, then you know that no one thing brought down Rome, and toleration of homosexuality was not even in the top 100 reasons why Rome failed.

Cultures fall… and they fall for numerous reasons… the Hittites were not a culture that was particularly tolerant of homosexuality, but when was the last time you ran into someone carrying a Hittite passport?

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
