GOProud’s attending any event at the Manchester Hyatt Hotel is a stark contrast to what the NAACP did 60 years ago when Adam Clayton Powell, the first African-American member of the congress (D-New York) was denied accommodation at San Diego’s most celebrated hotel- the El Cortez. For the next 50 years, no mainstream African-American organization help a convention or meeting at the hotel. For any supposed gay-rights organization to have a meeting at the Manchester Hyatt is outsite what would historically be viewed as supportive of civil rights- gay or otherwise. The few small meetings African-American GOP members held there have not earned even a footnote in history. Even white GOP organizations did not hold conventions there. Then as now, a small group wants to show how “Republican” there are, even when mainstream GOP groups do not want to attract the controversy that a larger meeting would stimulate- becoming the story instead of the purpose of the meeting.

I truly think, as a former Republican, that GOProud is a 25 person group with a computer and a fax machine to send out press releases.

I don’t think Republican gays like them at all.

I have a certain view of the GOProud crowd that may be due to my age and having come out* in the summer of Stonewall (1969):

If the current GOProuders were twenty years older (or maybe only ten), I think they would likely be closeted and faking their way through straight marriages. But now in today’s environment for gays they have mustered the courage to come out (although I wonder how many of them are really out among straights). And to what ever degree they are out, it is thanks to the non-conforming gays that paved the way and with whom they would not want to associate themselves.

The message I seem to hear from them goes something like this:

“Except for the insignificant itty-bitty detail of us being gay, we are 110% conservative conformists, just like you. We are flag-waving freedom-loving real American patriots fighting to take our country back from those America-hating liberals. Hell yeah, we want to see the birth certificate, too! And just to burnish our credentials, we’ll lead the way in breaking that Manchester boycott that was orchestrated by equality-loving gay people with whom we would never associate.”

* Remember, the term “coming out” had a much more limited definition in 1969 than it does today. In those days it meant only coming out to yourself and to other gay people and living a double life. It was universally understood that, of course, you kept it a secret from family, friends, and co-workers if you wanted to survive.

I guess it could be considered a measure of how far we’ve come that certain people now feel free to wander away from the safety of our common bond and seek their fortunes with our oppressors.

Being a “conservative,” like being a “liberal,” is always a rather vague political position. I’m not quite sure what being a “real” conservative is supposed to mean these days, but usually it involves complaining about the government while you fail to support cutting spending or eliminating freedom destroying programs like the war on drug users, ranting on about abortion and convincing people that al Queda is behind every rock and we need to torture people to extract information. Plus a lot of flag waving support of the military and every war that comes along. Is that it?

What’s very sad is that media such as Fox News use these unfortunate few people to demonstrate that they are not anti-gay bigots, even when they are….

Just like that one black man at a Tea Party rally: “see, we’re not racists”…

These fools do all of us a great disservice. GOProud is not deserving of any respect.

It’s ironic, really. San Diego is chuck full to running over with pro-gay Republicans. The district attorney is a lesbian Republican, there is a gay Republican city councilman, the mayor, a Republican, campaigned against Prop 8. If there ever was a place to court support for a gay Republican group, it would be San Diego.

But none of these folk would be considered “real conservatives” by GOProud anyway. So why not just piss them off.

They remind me of the old Groucho Marx quote, “I don’t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.” Except in their case, I think that they may mean it.
