I refuse to be treated like a 2nd class citizen.

The choice is between second class citizen and the status quo of not a citizen. It's progress in the right direction.

To paraphrase Kant, you generally have to give conservative people additional time to grow up.

"Chile is a pretty conservative country, so if this were to pass, it’d be a pretty big milestone, I think."

The Catholic Church is strong in Chile - but the country itself seems to be largely secular. Just see former Chilean president, Michele Bachelet, was openly agnostic. It will be 2050 when the US will elect a president who doesn't posture as a devoute Christian. By the way, in Latin American bigger countries - Argentina, Brazil and Mexico - I would say opposition to gay rights is much less intense than it is in the US. The US should be ashamed it is so retrogade in so many social issues - not only in gay rights - when not only western Europe but even Latin America succeed in presenting a less dogmatic and more secular worldview on society.

Spain, which was known for its religious and political fanaticism, now has gay marriage. Most of Latin America should be ashamed.

Better to be second class than to not be acknowledged at all. Take all the progress you can get. Marriage will come eventually.

2nd rate citicenship.

Why not abolish civil marriage all together and let the church do it then?

I refuse to be treated like a 2nd class citizen.
