As the Vatican protects pedophiles, Canterbury crumples in fear before African bigots. This guy is truly pathetic.

If I were him, I would have simply said to the African bishops: “If you want to leave, then go right ahead! We won’t stop you!”

A schism would only further isolate them and also cut them off from the funding contributed by wealthier dioceses while also greatly reducing their ability to influence churches in the West. Any churches in the West that did join with the African churches would make pariahs of themselves as well, considering that aligning oneself with murderers isn’t too fashionable these days.

I think this discussion is a bit unsympathetic to Williams predicament. If he did show some spine the African Primates would likely break their Communion with the British and North American churches, loosing what chance there is for influence over Anglicans in Africa now and in the future. I don’t think that the Archbishop of Canterbury can win no matter what he does.

Poor ol' Catweazel. Life is certainly much more of a struggle when you don't have a spine, and must eat all your suppers with a very long spoon. On related news the United Nations Commission on Human Rights have just elevated Idi Amin, Pol Pot, François Duvalier, Hastings Banda, Jean-Bédel Bokassa, Mobutu Sese Seko and Kim Il-sung to the status of patron saints. I’ve always imagined Richard Dawkins as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Ironically, I think he would have done a better job than Williams in putting the African church leaders in their rightful place.
