I could have been clearer. The governor appoints the jurists by selecting from a list of potential jurists who have been vetted by a State Judicial Nominating Committee. Then periodically they are brought up for a confirming vote of the people.

These three justices are up for their confirmation vote.

Please clarify: one sentence says three Iowa judges are up for re-election; elsewhere it says they are appointed on a merit system. Is there a contradiction or am I missing something?
