I like the standard definition of family: two or more persons related by blood, marriage or adoption.

But where does it leave those of us who have been shunned by our blood relatives and can't marry?

Alone again, naturally.

Just all the more reason to keep working for Marriage Equality. Probably for many people, the status of a civil union is a slightly embellished form of two people shacking up, regardless of same or mixed gender. When equality is achieved on the national level, only then will most people see ANY and ALL married couples as family, even if no children are present.
