The lives of tens of thousands of gay and lesbian service members don't seem to matter. The policy of the commander in chief doesn't seem to matter. The results of a Pentagon study don't seem to matter. The only thing that matters is the internal social dynamics of the Senate, and the vanity of Reid, McCain, Lieberman and Collins.
