I know of few if any members of the military who would give their life for congress or the president. But many would, and have, give their lives for their country and/or the fellow servicemembers who were fighting with and for them.

But I guess these petulant tighty-righties think that they need to give their lives for agents of the country, not the country itself. Go figure.

if your service is dependant upon agreement with policy (pace Nuremburg defense) you're a dilettante not a soldier.

And patriotism is given even to a "dented" country. And consider how many gays have served and died for countries that depised them

The bad news is, a lot of bigotry only ends when the afflicted is six feet under.

The good news is that it does end.

"It seems the drums finally got to the American people — 65 of your senators voted to end the ban this weekend. The homosexual activists’ fight for cultural acceptance of a particular behavior will go on. You’ll need some earplugs because the drums will continue." Well, lookee here, someone finally sees their comeuppance coming.

Pffft!
It's been years now, I've been serving in the LAPD with ex military folks, who are gay.
The environment is very much the same of course.
Our cadets are required to take a course at the Museum of Tolerance.
As a matter of fact, new cadets from agencies all over the country do it.
Some, internationally. There certainly are many Israelis who come by the Museum who are still serving actively in their country's military.

So what this man is saying is exceptionally stupid, ugly and inconsiderate.
Because the moral courage it takes for gay men and women to serve in uniform, a country not reciprocating equal freedoms, rights and protections is so remarkable, it's amazing that Christians don't LEARN from it.
And try to EMULATE it.

It's not for glory, but for what's right.

TRUE Christians DO CARE... and most agree with unbiased acceptance. It is mainly the Fundies who feel defeated by this clarification of law. The rest of the world could care less.

Sexual diversity and fully integrated armies exist in MANY countries around the world, and many such armies existed throughout history.

Welcome to equality, freedom, and justice for ALL, America !!! Get off your "high horse". Do you not realize a person can be Christian AND gay? God IS Love!!! So stuff your hatred and bigotry. Find a Life.

James, that's all bluster. This is a done deal. We have to wait and make sure there's no foot dragging by the military on implementation; otherwise this is done and there's nothing they can do about it.

My sense of the military commanders is that while some were not pleased, their service to this country, and following the commands of congress and the commander in chief (Obama) outweigh their protests.

The new congress would not be able to pass something through both houses, and there's no way Obama would sign it, and virtually impossible for them to get a veto-proof majority.

I predict implementation will probably not start until the summer, possibly the fall, and could be a multi-step process that takes a year to do. Likely there will be a few anti-gay martyrs who get booted from the military and end up as Fox News personalities like Joe the Plumber.

The military wasn't happy about racial integration or women soldiers, but both were sincerely implemented nonetheless. The military is special in that duty is above all else. Individual soldiers may not agree with what they are being ordered to do, but they will still do it, still give 100%, and still do it the best of their ability. All that stuff about honor and duty and service isn't just talk: they mean it.

Spencer makes a common and necessary mistake; he assumes that all military servicepersons share his prejudice.

He's willing to ignore the study, the news reports, the absolute lack of any concerned response from military personnel in order to hold to the presumption that "military members in the field are left with" the same sort of biased and prejudiced thoughts that he has.

He must.

Because if the military members truly didn't share his biases - if this ranting wasn't really on their behalf but based solely in his own desire to disadvantage gay people - then what would that make him?
