The economic impact won't be "enormous" to the country, but it will be enormous to me, and to many other married same-sex couples. The value and importance of it will be enormous, too.

All that aside, I think Napolitano presented the correct rationale for why Obama and the DOJ can decide not to defend a law in court.

Kristie,

I've not had that impression about Napolitano; He has always appeared to me to be a social conservative.

Sadly, he is a bit inclined to spout his opinion without knowing the facts. As he did in this instance. For example:

1. He discussed the decisions "not being appealed" though that is still uncertain in Massachusetts.

2. He called the change "the law of the land" while it would likely be the law in only part of the land, at least at first.

3. He talked about "interstate commerce," but only section 3 of DOMA has been challenged in court, leaving the other-state-recognition portion still in place.

4. The "enormous" and "unquatifiable" exaggerations are nonsense. We are talking about a small population, of which only a portion will marry and only in a handful of states.

Napolitano said the economic impact of this would be "huge" and almost unquantifiable. That's a gross exageration. As a percentage of total government revenue the tax breaks that will be given to gay couples are virtually zero.

Crowley said that if a Republican president had said he wouldn't enforce any laws protecting gays there'd be a huge uproar. She seems to think that means there should be a huge uproar about this. There isn't because there's no equality between the viewpoint that gays deserve no protection and the viewpoint that gays deserve, at least some, equal treatment - a large marjority of Americans reject the view that gays should be absolutely oppressed and favour the view that gays deserve some measure of equal treatment.

It just shows how twisted the viewpoint is of many fox news commentors, they think the view that gays should be totally oppressed deserves just as much respect as the view that gays deserve largely equal treatment.

Judge Napolitano is a Libertarian with a very strong belief in personal liberty. From everything I have heard of him on air, he seems to support the rights of same-sex couples to marry the partner of their choice. Whether he personally approves of homosexuality or same-sex marriage beyond a constitutional view point I'm not sure, but being a Libertarian, it's more likely that he would have a more liberal opinion on it in general. Monica Crowley tends to get on her moral high horse & becomes very annoying very quickly.

...is she aware that the law is still being enforced by the executive branch? She said about eight times that it wasn't. That channel seems to be lying more than usual today.
