FL Congressman: Gay Marriage Will End Society

Jim Burroway

June 3rd, 2011

Right Wing Watch is following the proceedings at Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum Collegians, and caught this video of Rep. Allen West (R-FL) warning that marriage equality is an “oxymoron” and will end society:

The term ‘gay marriage’ is an oxymoron. Because marriage is a union and a bond between a man and a woman to do one single thing: the furtherance of society by procreation, through creating new life. Have you ever read the book America Alone by Mark Steyn? It’s about demographics. And if we continue with a cycle of debt and punishing our unborn then it just becomes a matter of time before you don’t have society.

So you think young straight people who want to get married should first have compulsary fertility test and be then be made to sign a pledge to breed on pain of being forceably divorced for non-compliance?

Or that women who have had the menopause should be prevented from getting married at all?

I could go on but it really isn’t worth the effort.

Richard Rush

. . . marriage is a union and a bond between a man and a woman to do one single thing: the furtherance of society by procreation, through creating new life. . . .

If that definition were true, wouldn’t you expect it to have made it’s way into the legal definition of marriage? But after all these centuries, the inconvenient facts are that marriage does NOT require procreation, and procreation does NOT require marriage.

And, where does that guy seemingly get the notion that if one “machine” is made to do one task, another “machine” is not permitted to do it? A car is created specifically to get you from point A to point B, so does that mean a motorcycle is not permitted to be used for that purpose?

That guy is another case of conservative brain petrifaction in action.

Yeah, I’m REALLY getting tired of this EXTREME stupidity. Fine, have it your way… marriage is ONLY for procreation. Then you have the government pass a Constitutional amendment banning marriage for infertile couples, those who don’t want children, and the elderly. Until you do that, keep your ignorant homophobic pie-hole shut.

I just sent this clown an e-mail cause he’s an embarrassment to my (newly adopted) state. Can’t believe he represents Ft. Lauderdale.

My question to him was “will your children decide not to procreate if I go down to city hall with my partner and get a marriage license”. (I hope so, cause we don’t need more stupid in the gene pool.)

Clayton, that is exactly what he is saying. Gay people get married, which causes via the underpants gnomes straight people not to get married, not to procreate. And if they are not procreating, which is the only reason for sexual intercourse, then of course they shouldn’t get married, further contributing to the vicious downward spiral of american society, exactly as it is happening in Massachusetts and canada and holland even as we speak.

They have claimed this ongoing assault on the family every single time one little bit of the legal stigmatization of gay people is removed from circulation. I remember well 35 years ago that when sodomy laws were repealed in California, they were out in force claiming that this was a direct hit on the family, always the family. and won’t nobody think of de chilluns?

And what is their evidence for this?

The alleged terrible condition of the american family. 40% divorce rates. 40% births out of wedlock. Serial marriage. 25% adultery rates. 37% anal intercourse between husbands and wives. High teen pregnancy rates. Blow job parties in Texas without any known gay boys participating. 46% black contribution to HIV statistics. The decline of the black family. Multiple children by multiple mothers and multiple fathers. Murphy Brown. arnold schwarzenegger. Mark Sanford. Ted haggard.

And all of this familial mayhem has occurred since 2005 when gay marriage was first legal in this country. heterosexuality and the family took a major hit.

Except, of course, that this is a Stanley Kurtz bit of academic homophobia. All of this obviously is a bit of heterosexuals behaving very badly and blaming the decline of THEIR morals on the existence of gay people.

Their alleged evidence is the bad behavior of the bulk of heterosexual society.

If that is not a textbook example of bigotry, the perfect proof that this is not about the family, not about God’s alleged word, not about de po’, innocent chilluns…

but about how much the very existence of gay people offends, attracts, delights, frightens and torments some straight people, and (I am more and more convinced) a whole passle of wanna-be-straight-but-ain’t homo-hatin’homos…

than i can’t quite imagine what is.

Ivan,

Ideally, they would have to breed in public so as to prove their willingness to procreate.

But, I guess we could compromise and just search their room for contraception and then have the community gather outside on their wedding night to be shown blood on the sheets. That sounds like a happy compromise… let’s start with Rep. West’s family.

“Blow job parties in Texas”?

Sir Andrew

June 3rd, 2011

I don’t think it’s fair to be attacking this man. After all, he is often forced to make statements while his family’s one working brain cell is on loan to one of his siblings or the odd cousin. As a result, the words coming out of his mouth are generally divorced from life as we know it on this planet.

It would help, I suppose, if he were to actually use the working brain cell when it’s his turn to have it, but that may be too much to ask of a man who earnestly believes he has a higher security clearance than the president.

Sir Andrew

June 3rd, 2011

Yeah, Timothy. I’d like a little more info on the Texas BJ parties myself. No gay men present? Those must be some pretty piss poor blow jobs then. Is it just the women doing the guys (a horrible fate for the guys), or are the men getting a little suction experience themselves?

Marlene

June 3rd, 2011

Gee, Mr. West… did you know that white folk said the exact same thing almost 45 years ago justifying the bans on interracial marriage?

Or are you like most conservative blacks and are deluded into thinking lynching a black different that say beating a gay man to death with an axe handle and throwing his body on a pile of burning tires?

As long as there are about two dozen people in a particular location, you’re going to have a society. That’s just the way it is, and all of the right’s blustering about then end of civilization is just so much gas.

After all, when you strip it down to basics, that’s what people do: we make societies, some better, some worse. Rep. West obviously wants to continue the worst aspects of the present one.

And since when did people start needing a license to make babies?

Ben In Oakland

blow job parties– because, as that either great southern icon of heterosexual morality stated, blow jobs aren’t sex, and it all depends on whatthe meaning of “is” is.

I’ve been getting the emails from NOM, full of Brian Brown’s boasts and hyperbole. But he and Diaz have been engaging in something else, typical of this movement: saying that they’ve been receiving death threats and duly reporting it to the police and FBI.

My friends, BB is hardly reserved in exposing what he thinks are the lies, or threats, or repression gay people are capable of. After all, he posted a video of a young man shouting at him in anger, and used it as proof that gay people are to be feared.

Soooo….
In our world of instant video messaging, easily traceable information and the ability to post just about anything online and linkage to it’s origins: why isn’t Brian Brown posting such threats online for all the world to see?
After all, if he wants to show that his life and that of his supporters are being threatened, I don’t see why he can’t SHOW and PROVE it. Right?

One can SAY you’ve lodged a report to law enforcers, but it’s a crime to make a FALSE one.
So, I’m thinking that BB and Diaz haven’t done any such thing. Nor did they have evidence for the local authorities to work with or that there was evidence such threats came from gay people at all.

It’s enough for BB to just SAY it’s happened, and his supporters will believe him. And UNQUESTIONINGLY.
And that is what is so very disturbing about BB.
Our side however, has hard evidence of what his sort of rhetoric will do.
The properties of gay couples across the country being burned down after anti gay conflicts with neighbors.
Children being assaulted by their peers in school.
The suicides that result, or the execution style murders of kids such as Lawrence King, after weeks of suffering anti gay bullying.
Or the careers of various gay people, especially soldiers, being lost to third party outing.

So, it’s worth investigating just HOW and in what way, BB is actually threatened?
Because his crying wolf, his hyperbolic rhetoric that being challenged is ‘threatening’, or that gay people are such a terrorizing presence, his rallies have low attendance out of fear: he deserves to be outed for the lying coward that he is.
Real people are getting harmed out there because of such rhetoric.
And it’s NOT BB or anyone who shares his views.

Not to mention this:

“Because marriage is a union and a bond between a man and a woman to do one single thing: the furtherance of society by procreation, through creating new life.”

Exactly WHO is it that is trying to change the definition of marriage? No law says this anywhere in the country. The catholic vows include children “if god so wills”. What custom of marriage says this? none. For some people it is an expectation, but nowhere is it required legally, culturally, socially,
or in religious belief and practice. If anything, this line of “reasoning” proves that this is not about changing the definiiton of marriage for heterosexuals, but about expanding access to include gay people.

and true to form, this is just one more example oif heterosexuals behaving VERY badly, and then blaming us for the difficulties and the problems.

How did Rep. West and his friends not get the message: That sort of Society went down the tubes a long time ago. Like the golden age of happy life on the ole plantation that suddenly appeared in the rearview mirror in 1866, that sort of society is best experienced in historical fiction, and not the sort Gore Vidal writes. I for one suspect that that is the point; that by getting up a lather about the differences between the present and a made-up past, some folks avoid dealing with the lives they are actually living. It is especially handy when these tragic losses can be held to be, at least primarily, somebody else’s fault.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
