Oh, thanks Ben. I didn’t understand your comment at the time as it was bracketed by others’ comments about not calling NOM the National Organization for Marriage because they are really against marriage.

Tim, in your article titled “Tim Pawlenty Caves to NOM Pressure” one of the tags is to “National Organization for Women”, not “National Organization for Marriage”.

I don’t know if Anthony was a lesbian but she was an abolitionist, a temperance leader and a suffragette (the Anthony Amendment (19th) gave women the right to vote). She was a Republican because at that time the Republicans were the more progressive of the parties. As she wrote in a letter to Elizabeth Cady Stanton,

“I shall work for the Republican party and call on all women to join me, precisely… for what that party has done and promises to do for women, nothing more, nothing less.”

As a very fascinating parallel, Anthony voted in the 1872 election (straight Republican ticket) for which she was arrested. Her defense was the new (1868) Fourteenth Amendment.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a single-issue organization for women who oppose abortion (I don’t know their position on gay issues). They chose that name because of a number of statements that indicate Anthony’s personal opposition to abortion.

NOW did defend Michele Bachmann about the Newsweek cover. (Tina Brown) AFAIK NOW did not mention NOM at all.

Oh good lord. And you know what happened? As I was writing it, I was thinking about another post that someone else had written that was mistakenly tagged incorrectly with the National Organization for Women instead of NOM, and I was thinking to myself, “Self, be sure to choose the *correct* tag before posting it. You don’t want to mess that one up!”

And I didn’t. I got the tag correct.

Unless there’s been a drastic change of policy at NOW, I think you intended “National Organization for Marriage,” not “National Organization for Women.”
