We are EVERYWHERE! LOL!!!

Seriously, it was surreal for me when I moved to Cathedral City to run into gays *everywhere* I went. My sister came for a visit and I just had to tell her that, yes, anytime you see two guys in the car next to you, it’s virtually a guarantee they’re gay (especially if they in their 30s and upward). It gave me whiplash for the longest time because I had lived in Fresno for 25 year; a place where we had to drive the freeway for 30 minutes just to get to the nearest gay area. We almost *never* saw gay couples out shopping anywhere in Fresno. Now we live in a seniors-only mobile home park where 40% of the 540 homes are gay-owned. We have a pot-luck every month at the club house called “Friends of Dorothy”. We joke that there’s so many of us they could have the gay parade at our park and get the same attendance as the do in downtown Palm Springs.

Some friends of ours when we lived in Tucson had a “vacation” home in Bisbee before they started renting it out – always enjoyed our visits there. I’ve heard the parties around Pride and Halloween are something to behold but never got to see them firsthand.

I had never heard of the place before, but it seems perfectly obvious that the place had to be gay friendly. The Copper “Queen” Hotel, the “Lavender Pit” mine. That just puts it right out there in the open. The only thing wrong with the place for me is all of those stairs, my lungs are not happy with anything that’s no level.

I was in Bisbee just a couple of years ago! Lovely town, friendly people, had a very happily memorable day. As remote as is for me, I can’t imagine I’ll ever make it back, but I sure wouldn’t mind if I did.

Wow.
What a blast from the past this little travelogue was for me. Haven’t been to Bisbee in decades, but I thought it a picturesque kinda place. Usually when I’m in the SW, I look for my NA brethren, and fellow artist/crafts persons and performers.
So I’m typically going rez whenever possible.

Thanks for this, Jim. I went to NM about three years ago, and traveled to Alb, Santa Fe and Flagstaff. I should swing around AZ sometime soon. And definitely come calling on you, brother.

Oh damn…just had a craving for my grandmother’s brand of fry bread and chili.
