It seemed to me that Gingrich was (sort of) surging again in the polls, and could possibly have rivaled Romney. He was certainly well ahead of Santorum in polls I was seeing. So what do these people do? As you point out, they officially split the anti-Romney bloc! Their endorsement gets Santorum nowhere, sucks critical votes away from Gingrich, and guarantees a Romney victory. What a strategy! If you wrote this stuff in a novel, you'd be laughed out of town. To theatre and bluster, you should add stupidity.

Even by the standards of the Republican party of today, Gingrich stands out as an especially mean-spirited, spiteful, anger-driven, and judgmental man. I suspect the fundies just instinctively recognize a kindred spirit. It’s hard to say why they are so devoted to Gingrich. Maybe it’s because his background is Protestant and they have doubts about the sincerity of his devotion to the Catholic Church.
