It seemed to me that Gingrich was (sort of) surging again in the polls, and could possibly have rivaled Romney. He was certainly well ahead of Santorum in polls I was seeing.

So what do these people do? As you point out, they officially split the anti-Romney bloc! Their endorsement gets Santorum nowhere, sucks critical votes away from Gingrich, and guarantees a Romney victory. What a strategy!

If you wrote this stuff in a novel, you&#039;d be laughed out of town.</description>

Possible, but I suspect a deeper psychological factor.  Even by the standards of the Republican party of today, Gingrich stands out as an especially mean-spirited, spiteful, anger-driven, and judgmental man.  I suspect the fundies just instinctively recognize a kindred spirit.</description>
