So how is it that the “special rights” of the “Conservatives” the Fundamentalist Christians and the super rich haven’t got put up to a vote yet? You know? That right to walk all over the rest of us? I sure didn’t vote for the economy to be purposely crashed in ’08 or for people to decide my mom can’t marry her partner.

I’m tired of all these liars.

Funny how the only time they want people’s rights put to a vote is when it’s not their rights.

The funniest thing about Chris Christie’s proposal is that amending the state constitution simply won’t happen. In NJ there is no referendum or ballot initiative process. Any amendment has to pass both houses of the state legislature with 3/5 msjority in each house and then pass a simple majority of the voters. Given the political make up of the senate, Christie has to know an amendment won’t ever get to the ballot.

The turn-out for this election is heavily Republican biased, so we can’t assume that the people providing polls with a 52% approval will be the people that vote in the upcoming elections.

just a wild idea thinking aloud…

I wonder what a bill legalizing marriage but subject to approval of the electorate would do.

Polls suggest that marriage has pretty strong public support in NJ. Yes, that can change between now and the election, but I’m guessing we would win.

And Christie would be put in an odd political position: he would have to sign the bill, having asked for it. So he would be the first Republican Governor to sign a marriage bill – even if it was to “put it to a vote”. And all his primary opponents (should he run for prez some day) would forget the “to a vote” part in their political ads.

Perhaps Governor Christie believes the state legislature should be abolished and we should just go to direct democracy for every issue. If so, he should run on that platform.
